The 2000/01 series in India is one of the greatest series in cricket history. After being forced to follow on in Kolkata, VVS Laxman (281) and Rahul Dravid (180) made a magical partnership to stage a brilliant comeback. India won 2–1 and broke Australia’s record winning streak of 16 matches. The 2003/04 series in Australia was drawn 1–1, which was India’s best performance on foreign soil till then. In 2004/05, under the leadership of Adam Gilchrist, Australia finally won a series in India after 35 years, winning the series 2–1.
The 2007/08 series in Australia was mired in controversy. It was the most infamous “Monkeygate” scandal involving Harbhajan Singh and Andrew Symonds. Australia won the series 2-1, but sportsmanship came under scrutiny. In 2008/09, India, led by Anil Kumble and MS Dhoni, bounced back and defeated Australia 2-0 at home. In 2010/11, India won the two-Test series 2-0, while in 2011/12, Australia took revenge by whitewashing them 4-0 at home. Then came the historic 2018/19 series, in which India, led by Kohli, became the first Asian team to win a Test series in Australia (2-1). In the 2022/23 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, India maintained their dominance at home with a 2-1 win, thanks to the spin duo of Ashwin and Jadeja. However, in the 2024/25 edition played in Australia, the Australian team, led by Pat Cummins, recovered from two consecutive series defeats to win 3-1 and capture the trophy.
