Here we look at the Delhi Capitals schedule. It is important to note that the full schedule is yet to be announced as the IPL is waiting for the Election Commission to confirm the dates of the assembly elections in Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Assam. Fans who follow the tournament closely will know that elections have affected the IPL schedule many times in the past.
For now, the league has announced a 16-day schedule, and Delhi Capitals will play four matches during this period. The Axar Patel-led team will begin their campaign against Lucknow Super Giants in Lucknow on April 1. After that match, they will return home to face five-time champions Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
The team, which previously played as Delhi Daredevils, is one of the two oldest IPL teams to never win the title. Till last season, Royal Challengers Bangalore also shared this record, but now only Punjab franchise Delhi stands with them. Because of this, the pressure has increased on the Delhi team to finally win the trophy.
Delhi has reached the IPL final only once, in 2020, where they lost to Mumbai Indians. Before that, they enjoyed a strong phase when they reached the semi-finals in 2008 and 2009. That period is still considered their most successful time in the tournament.
The IPL introduced the playoff format in 2011, and since then Delhi has reached the playoffs four times – in 2012, 2019, 2020 and 2021. They have also struggled in several seasons, finishing at the bottom of the table in 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2018. They finished fifth last season. This year they have added players like David Miller, Jammu and Kashmir’s Oqib Nabi, Pathum Nissanka, Lungi Ngidi, Ben Duckett and Kyle Jamieson. The team hopes that these signings will help them turn their fortunes around. In fact, only winning the IPL trophy this season will be considered a true success for them.
