The BBL has seen various eras of power. From the golden run of the Perth Scorchers to the continuity of the Sydney Sixers and the resurgence of the Brisbane Heat. Let’s see how each major team has left its mark on the league.
The Perth Scorchers are the most successful franchise in BBL history, with five titles (2013-14, 2014-15, 2016-17, 2021-22, and 2022-23). Players like Mitchell Marsh, Ashton Turner, Andrew Tye, and Jhye Richardson have played a vital role in their success. Their consecutive wins in 2021-22 and 2022-23 have cemented their dominance. And with that, the team has also shown the perfect blend of experience and youth.
If there was a face of consistency in the BBL, it would be the Sydney Sixers. The franchise has won three titles in 2011-12, 2019-20 and 2020-21 and has been runners-up multiple times. Under the leadership of Moises Henriques, the Sixers have relied on strong team chemistry and tactical execution. With star players like Josh Phillip, Sean Abbott and Daniel Hughes, they have been one of the toughest teams to beat. Their consecutive wins in 2019-20 and 2020-21 marked a golden era.
Since winning their first title in 2012-13, the Brisbane Heat have endured years of inconsistency. However, they bounced back in 2023–24, defeating the Sydney Sixers to win their second BBL title. The match was supported by batsmen like Colin Munro, Josh Brown and Matt Renshaw, as well as by the strong leadership of Usman Khawaja.
The Hobart Hurricanes finally ended their long wait by winning the 2024–25 season, defeating the Sydney Thunder in the final. It was a fairytale campaign for the Hurricanes, who had previously reached the final twice. The Hurricanes displayed fearless cricket throughout the tournament.
Adelaide Strikers won their first BBL title in 2017–18, defeating Hobart Hurricanes. Known for their bowling attack under Rashid Khan, the Strikers have been consistent contenders for several seasons. Their blend of bowling and smart batting under Travis Head has made them one of the most entertaining teams to watch.
The Stars, despite being one of the strongest teams on paper, have finished runners-up three times (2015-16, 2018-19 and 2019-20) but are yet to win.
Sydney Thunder won their first BBL title in 2015-16, defeating Melbourne Stars in a dramatic final.
The team, once led by Michael Hussey and Shane Watson, has always had potential but has struggled for consistency in later years. Their runners-up team in 2025 showcased the talent of young players like Jason Sanga and Oliver Davis. The Thunder are a team that can beat any opponent on their day.
