Cricket Canada has been suspended by the International Cricket Council with immediate effect after what the governing body described as “serious breaches” of its membership obligations. The move had been anticipated for weeks, particularly after allegations of corruption and match manipulation cast a long shadow over the sport’s administration in the country.

The suspension was confirmed following the ICC Board meeting on May 31.

For Cricket Canada, the decision follows months of scrutiny. In April, a documentary aired by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) alleged widespread corruption within the board and raised concerns about threats of violence involving players and support staff.

The claims generated uncomfortable questions around governance and accountability, putting the national body under increasing pressure.

Players Protected Despite Administrative Action

The ICC’s statement carried an important distinction. While Cricket Canada has been suspended as a governing body, the country’s men’s and women’s national teams will continue to participate in ICC events. The world body said it was determined to ensure players did not suffer because of issues beyond their control.

“In taking this decision, the ICC Board was mindful of the importance of protecting the interests of Canadian players and ensuring they are not disadvantaged by the governance issues affecting the national governing body,” the ICC said.

That means Canadian cricketers will still be eligible for international tournaments during the suspension period, even as the board itself faces sanctions.

ICC To Monitor Funding Distribution

The ICC has also decided that funding to Cricket Canada will not stop entirely.

Instead, the money will move through a controlled mechanism overseen directly by ICC management. Any funds released during the suspension period can only be used for approved national team programmes.

It is a sign of how seriously the ICC views the governance concerns. Financial support remains available, but oversight will now sit outside Cricket Canada’s direct control.

Pink Ball Could Enter Traditional Test Matches

Away from the disciplinary action, the ICC also approved a trial that could eventually alter the way Test cricket deals with bad light. Under the proposal, teams will be allowed to switch from a red ball to a pink ball during a conventional Test match if fading light threatens play. The change would only happen if both teams agree.

The idea is straightforward. Test matches regularly lose overs because players struggle to sight the red ball under deteriorating light conditions. A pink ball, designed for day-night cricket, is generally easier to see.

For now, it remains a trial rather than a permanent law. But if the experiment proves successful, it could become another tool for keeping matches moving when weather and light conditions become problematic.

The ICC also confirmed it will jointly fund research with the MCC into lighting technology at international venues, another attempt to reduce interruptions.

Other Rule Changes Also Approved

The meeting was not short on playing-condition discussions. The ICC approved trials for a revised interpretation of leg-side wides, with a batter’s position at the moment of delivery becoming the reference point for umpires.

There were smaller operational changes too. T20 Internationals will now feature 15-minute intervals, while head coaches and support staff will be allowed to communicate with players during scheduled drinks breaks.

Yet even with those adjustments on the table, the suspension of Cricket Canada remained the headline decision.
