Dale Steyn Open to CSK Coaching Role After IPL 2026

Former South African pacer Dale Steyn has expressed interest in becoming Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach if the franchise approaches him for the role.

A fan asked Dale Steyn on X (formerly Twitter), “If CSK contacts you, will you consider that offer?” raising the possibility of Steyn taking up the head coach role. Steyn replied, “Yes possibly,” indicating that he could consider the role.

Stephen Fleming’s Exit Ends 18-Year CSK Run

Stephen Fleming finally stepped down as Chennai Super Kings’ head coach, wrapping up an incredible 18-year run with the team. He had been in charge since way back in 2009, and during that time, he helped turn CSK into an absolute powerhouse, bringing home 5 IPL trophies and 2 Champions League titles.

Their latest IPL title under Fleming came in 2023. Following his departure from CSK, Stephen Fleming stepped into the role of head coach for England’s Test side. The move came after a string of poor performances from Chennai, which had left their coaching staff under serious scrutiny.

The franchise finished 10th in IPL 2025 and 8th in IPL 2026, missing the playoffs for 3 straight seasons. Texas Super Kings also ended the MLC 2026 season at the bottom of the table. After Fleming’s exit, CSK also ended his association with their other franchises, Joburg Super Kings in SA20 and Texas Super Kings in the MLC.

CSK Begin Search for Fleming’s Replacement

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the franchise is looking for an overseas coach to take the vacant position. The final call is expected to be taken after discussions with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni.

“We have spoken to the interested candidates, and we will sit down to finalise a name,” Viswanathan said in a recent interview.

Steyn Brings IPL Coaching Experience

When it comes to coaching, Dale Steyn has already proven he can deliver at the highest level. He stepped into the bowling coach role for Sunrisers Hyderabad from 2022 to 2024, returning to the franchise where he once dominated as a player.

His coaching paid off big time in 2024, when the SRH bowling unit hit top form and fired the team straight into the final.

CSK’s Potential Choices for Head Coach

Among the other names linked with the position are former CSK batting coach Michael Hussey, who has been associated with the franchise since 2018, and former South Africa all-rounder Albie Morkel, who was recently named head coach of Joburg Super Kings in SA20.

Morkel was part of CSK’s IPL title-winning teams in 2010 and 2011, while his appointment at Joburg Super Kings has been seen by many as a possible route towards the CSK head coach job.

Steyn has never held a confirmed head coaching role with an IPL franchise, and there has been no reported formal approach from CSK to him as of August 14. His response on X is still the only public sign that he would be interested in the position. CSK are expected to name their new head coach before the IPL 2027 auction cycle gets underway.
