The first-ever women’s Test match at Lord’s Cricket Ground begins on July 10 and runs through July 13, making this one of the most significant fixtures in women’s cricket history. England will face India in the first women’s Test at the iconic venue, exactly 50 years since Rachael Heyhoe Flint first led out an England Women’s team at the ground.

Both teams arrive at Lord’s carrying the hangover of a T20 World Cup campaign that did not deliver what either wanted. India failed to make the semi-finals after losing group matches to Australia and South Africa, while England lost the final to Australia at Lord’s.

Key Insights

India

Harmanpreet Kaur will captain the side with Smriti Mandhana as vice-captain. India have largely trusted their experienced core, with Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma expected to carry the major responsibility in the batting group.

Sneh Rana keeps her place in the Test side despite missing out on the T20 World Cup squad. Rana featured in India’s previous Test against Australia and remains a key option in the longer format because of her ability to influence matches with both bat and ball. Her off-spin could be particularly useful in English conditions.

Yastika Bhatia returns after a lengthy injury and strengthens the squad further, with her left-handed batting offering useful variety. India’s recent Test record gives them confidence.

After posting 428 in their first innings, with half-centuries from Jemimah Rodrigues, Yastika Bhatia and Deepti Sharma, India bowled England out for 136 with Deepti returning sensational figures of 5/7. Then dismissed England for 131 in the second innings to seal their biggest-ever Test victory by runs. That result will be fresh in England’s minds when the toss is made at Lord’s.

England

Nat Sciver-Brunt will lead England in the first-ever women’s Test at Lord’s. England have won only one of their last ten Tests, going back to 2015, and their previous Test was a massive defeat at the MCG in January 2025, so they may be rustier than India in the format.

Five England players receive their maiden Test call-ups, with batter Alice Capsey, wicketkeeper Eleanor Threlkeld, seamer Grace Potts, spin all-rounder Mady Villiers and 18-year-old left-arm spinner Tilly Corteen-Coleman all playing their first Test.

Sophie Ecclestone remains England’s most dangerous bowling weapon in the longest format. Heather Knight brings experience and composure to an otherwise young middle order. Sciver-Brunt’s presence with both bat and ball gives England their best chance of building meaningful partnerships and taking wickets across four days.

Pitch Report: Lord’s Cricket Ground

The Lord’s pitch offers early swing for bowlers, especially under cloudy skies, before it flattens out later to favour batters, while spinners find grip and turn by Day 4 of Tests.

In Test cricket at Lord’s, the first-innings average score is around 309, dropping to 298, 256 and 159 in the second, third and fourth innings respectively. That sharp drop in fourth-innings average tells the full story. Teams that bat first and bat big put themselves in an almost unassailable position.

The famous slope of around 2.5 metres across the playing surface significantly affects the speed and tactics of the ball for both batsmen and bowlers, and players must adjust their play to take this natural feature into account.

Seamers will enjoy the overcast English July morning conditions with the new ball in hand. Once both openers are set and the pitch flattens, the batter-friendly surface allows big totals to be built.

Toss Prediction

Teams winning the toss at Lord’s often choose to bowl first to take advantage of favourable bowling conditions, with fast bowlers able to extract movement and bounce, especially in overcast weather, making it challenging for batters to settle.

However, the drop-off in fourth-innings scoring at this ground is severe and many captains in Test cricket still prefer to bat first and build a large total that the surface cannot chase by the final day. With both teams arriving low on red-ball confidence, the toss winner will face a genuinely difficult decision.

Match Prediction

India head into this Test as the more confident red-ball side and their recent form against England in the format backs that reading clearly. The head-to-head record in Test cricket is, perhaps surprisingly, in favour of India.

England have five players stepping into Test cricket for the first time and the Lord’s slope and conditions do not wait for first-timers to find their feet. Deepti Sharma’s ability to bowl out batting lineups cheaply as shown by her 5/7 is the most dangerous weapon on either side.

If India’s top order builds a first innings total above 300, their spinners and seamers will back themselves to defend it across four days.

India are favourites to win this historic Test. England have the ground, the occasion and a partisan crowd. India have the form, the experience in this format and a recent result against this same opponent that will not leave their minds from the first ball bowled.
