The IPL final saw the biggest team score in the history of T20 cricket. A big team score in an IPL final doesn’t just win matches. A big team score in an IPL final cements a franchise’s place in IPL history. These are the seven biggest team scores posted in an IPL final.
Gujarat Titans’ team score of 214 for 4 against Chennai Super Kings in Ahmedabad is the highest team score in an IPL final. The Titans broke the record set by Sunrisers Hyderabad against Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2016.
This huge team score was based on Sai Sudarshan’s 96 off 47 balls. Chasing a revised target of 171 in 15 overs after play was interrupted due to rain, CSK finished the job off the last ball, with Ravindra Jadeja hitting two sixes and a four in the last two balls off Mohit Sharma.
The team score of 214 was the highest team score in an IPL final so far. It was not enough to win. But as a team score in an IPL final, it remains the benchmark that every chasing team now bats first.
Sunrisers Hyderabad won their first IPL title by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by eight runs at the Chinnaswamy Stadium. David Warner scored 69 runs off 38 balls, while Ben Cutting scored an unbeaten 39 off 15 balls to post a score of 208 for 7 wickets.
Yuvraj Singh contributed 38 runs in the middle overs. Cutting then scored 39 runs off just 15 balls with four sixes and three fours. Cutting scored 24 runs in the last over.
The team’s score of 208 runs remained unchanged. SRH won by eight runs, RCB could score 200 runs for 7 wickets in reply. The team’s score gave Sunrisers their first and only IPL title.
Chennai Super Kings’ team score of 205 for 5 was the highest team score in an IPL final at that time, surpassing their previous team score of 168 for 5 against Mumbai Indians in 2010.
Vijay and Hussey shared an opening partnership of 159 runs, the highest partnership of an IPL season at that venue. CSK’s team score ended with 205 runs, putting a lot of pressure on RCB.
Chennai played an almost perfect game and won their second IPL trophy by defeating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs. In reply, RCB were all out for 147 runs. That team score of 205 runs was also the team score that made CSK the first team in IPL history to win two consecutive titles.
Lendl Simmons’ 68 and captain Rohit Sharma’s 50 off 26 balls helped Mumbai Indians post a score of 202 for five.
At 150 after 16 overs, with Kieron Pollard and Ambati Rayudu ready to bat, Mumbai Indians were waiting to explode. Pollard scored 36 off 18 balls to take the team past the 200-run mark.
Although CSK had a strong batting lineup, the target always seemed out of reach. CSK were bowled out for 161 for eight. Mumbai Indians won by 41 runs to win their second IPL title.
With Manish Pandey’s 50-ball 94, the Knight Riders could not trail at any stage. KKR chased down the target of 200 with three balls to spare.
Despite the immense pressure, there was a chance to chase. KKR needed 21 runs to win in the death overs, which led to Karanvir Singh taking four wickets. They needed 21 runs in the last three overs.
Piyush Chawla made it possible by hitting a six and a four in the final over. This was the only attempt to chase more than 200 runs in an IPL final.
In the 2014 IPL final, KKR chased down 200, the seventh highest team score in the history of IPL finals by Kings XI Punjab. Wriddhiman Saha scored an unbeaten 115 off 55 balls, while Manan Vohra provided vital support by scoring 67 off 52 balls.
Together, they helped Kings XI Punjab post 199 for 4 in 20 overs. Axar Patel and Mitchell Johnson’s brilliant spell kept Kings XI in the game and bowled a brilliant delivery in the 19th over. But Piyush Chawla hit a half-tracker outside off the ground, leaving KKR needing just five runs off the last over.
The team score of 199 was not enough. But it is still one of the most aggressive scores in an IPL final.
