India’s hopes for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup came to a disappointing end. They were defeated by Australia by six wickets in the T20. India certainly put up a competitive score and put in a strong performance. However, they failed to stop Australia’s experienced batting lineup. This allowed the defending champions to secure victory with a few balls to spare.

The result ended India’s campaign. It also highlighted areas where improvement is needed as they continue their quest for a maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title.

India posts a fighting score

After being asked to bat first, India got off to a steady start. They then lost wickets at regular intervals. The top order put up a promising performance. But struggled to convert the start into a significant score. A balanced partnership from the middle order helped India recover. This gave the team a respectable score that kept them in the game.

India managed to cross the 140-run mark. However, the innings lacked pace bowling towards the end, which has become very important in modern T20 cricket. Australia’s bowling attack limited the boundaries during the death overs. This prevented India from setting a more challenging target.

Australia get another chance

Australia’s target was based on patience and experience. After early success by India’s bowlers, the Australian batsmen absorbed the pressure and then changed gears in the middle overs.

A strong partnership raised hopes that the chase team would not face any major obstacles. India tried to counter-attack by taking timely wickets. However, Australia’s depth in the batting proved too strong. Despite six wickets in hand, the winning runs were scored. The victory once again showed that Australia is one of the most dominant teams in women’s cricket.

Where India failed

India certainly showed determination throughout the tournament. Yet based on Cricbites‘ observations, a few key factors contributed to their exit:

  • Lack of finishing power
  • Missed opportunities in the field
  • Average bowling
  • Experience under pressure

Conclusion

India’s defeat to Australia was yet another heartbreaking defeat. But that should not detract from the progress the team has made recently. Still, consistently competing against the strongest teams in the world is a positive sign.

Australia once again showed why they are the benchmark in women’s cricket. While India left the tournament with valuable experience. As the next ICC cycle begins, Indian fans will be hoping that this talented team can translate its potential into the long-awaited world title.
