IND vs SL: Dinusha Resists, but India Maintain Firm Grip on Colombo Test

India continued to hold the upper hand in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. It was even despite a spirited resistance from Sonal Dinusha. The young Sri Lankan all-rounder produced another determined innings, but India’s strong first-innings total and disciplined bowling kept the hosts under serious pressure.

India Set the Tone with a Massive Total

After winning the toss and batting first, India built a commanding position at the Sinhalese Sports Club. Devdutt Padikkal continued his excellent run with a century, while Dhruv Jurel provided the finishing touch with an unbeaten 115. Jurel’s composed knock helped India declare at 503/9, giving the visitors a substantial platform from which to attack Sri Lanka’s batting line-up.

The total also reflected India’s growing confidence in the series. Having already won the opening Test in Galle by 165 runs, Shubman Gill’s side entered Colombo looking to seal the series with another dominant performance.

Dinusha Leads Sri Lanka’s Resistance

Sri Lanka’s response initially appeared to be heading towards another collapse. However, Sonal Dinusha once again emerged as the major source of resistance. After scoring 100 and 84 in the first Test, Dinusha continued his remarkable start to Test cricket against India. He struck a patient 103 off 162 balls in Colombo, adding crucial runs with the lower order and delaying India’s push for a quick finish.

His effort was particularly important because Sri Lanka had slipped into trouble early in the innings. Dinusha’s ability to absorb pressure and build partnerships gave the hosts a brief opportunity to reduce the deficit. The youngster’s consistency has also put him in rare company. His first three Test innings against India have all produced scores of at least 80, a feat previously achieved by only Zaheer Abbas and Everton Weekes.

India Enforce the Follow-On

Despite Dinusha’s resistance, India eventually completed the job. Sri Lanka were dismissed for 290, leaving India with a huge 213-run first-innings lead. Debutant Saransh Jain played an important role in closing out the innings, while Prasidh Krishna and Manav Suthar also finished with three wickets each. Dinusha was the final wicket to fall, caught at slip off Saransh Jain. With Sri Lanka falling short of India’s first-innings score by such a considerable margin, Gill had no hesitation in enforcing the follow-on.

Sri Lanka Face Another Uphill Battle

Sri Lanka’s second innings began with another setback as Lahiru Udara fell early. Kamil Mishara and Pasindu Sooriyabandara then attempted to steady the innings before Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Mishara. Although Sri Lanka showed greater resistance later in the innings, India remained in a position to push for an innings victory. At the latest stage of play on Day 4, Sri Lanka were 194/3, still trailing India by 19 runs after being forced to follow on.

Dinusha a Major Positive for Sri Lanka

While the match situation remains heavily tilted towards India, Dinusha has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s biggest positives from the series. His ability to score under pressure against a strong Indian attack suggests that Sri Lanka may have found a promising young player for the future. However, individual brilliance has not yet been enough to change the overall balance of the Colombo Test. India’s huge first-innings score, effective bowling attack and 213-run advantage have left the visitors firmly in control.

Sri Lanka now need to produce a major second-innings effort simply to save the Test, while India will look to break through and complete a series-clinching victory. The match is entering to its decisive stages. The battle between Sri Lanka’s resistance and India’s relentless attack will determine whether the hosts can force a draw or India finish the job.
