Indian batters will look to sharpen their game against spin during a three-day warm-up against a Sri Lanka XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) on August 7, ahead of the two-Test series against Sri Lanka next week. The aim is to recreate the uneven, spin-friendly surfaces India are likely to encounter in Galle, giving the batters a more realistic setting to prepare for the conditions.
Good-quality spin has troubled India against New Zealand and South Africa at home recently, and Sri Lanka are expected to present a similar challenge. The hosts have a strong group of spinners, especially on their own pitches, making this practice game very important for India’s batters before the first Test in Galle on August 15.
Some of India’s main batters, including captain Shubman Gill, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal, had already started working against spin at their home facilities before travelling to Colombo. Still, that cannot replace actual time spent batting on a Sri Lankan surface.
The three-day game will give them a better feel for the local conditions. It is especially useful because several players will be playing red-ball cricket in Sri Lanka for the first time.
India last played a Test series in Sri Lanka in 2017, and the squad has changed a lot since then. Rahul, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja are the only players in the current squad who have played Test cricket in Sri Lanka before.
With Jasprit Bumrah unavailable because of injury, Mohammed Siraj will lead India’s pace attack. He will have support from Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain.
Apart from Siraj and Kuldeep, the bowling group has limited experience in these conditions. Brar and Jain both performed well for India A against Sri Lanka A in Galle last month, and they will be keen to get another chance to bowl on the same type of surface.
Head coach Gautam Gambhir also stressed the importance of using the practice game properly.
“We know what is in front of us. We can do volume, we can push our limits, we can tick all the boxes and come 15th morning whether we are batting first or bowling first we will be absolutely ready with every answer to every question thrown at us.”
“So make sure to tick all the boxes from now on,” Gambhir told his players in a video posted by BCCI.
However, India’s plans could face a setback as rain is expected in the city from Friday, which could affect the practice match.
Sri Lanka have also named a strong SLC XI, featuring several players who are in contention for a place in the Test squad. Sonal Dinusha, who has played three Tests for Sri Lanka, will captain the side. The squad also includes fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara, along with spinners Isitha Wijesundara and Ramesh Mendis.
