Litchfield’s Record-Breaking Fifty Gives Sunrisers Leeds Fresh Hope in The Hundred

Phoebe Litchfield smashed the fastest half-century in Women’s Hundred history as Sunrisers Leeds beat Birmingham Phoenix by 9 wickets at Edgbaston. Her unbeaten 71 off 33 balls helped Sunrisers chase down 108 with 31 balls to spare.

The victory propelled Sunrisers Leeds into fourth place while simultaneously extinguishing the knockout hopes of Birmingham Phoenix, MI London, and London Spirit.

Birmingham Phoenix Struggle to Build Momentum

Sunrisers Leeds Women won the toss and elected to field first, sending Birmingham Phoenix in to bat. It proved to be a difficult start for the home side as the top order failed to fire.

Following a poor performance from the top order, Ellyse Perry revived the innings with a quickfire 31 off 22 balls. She survived an early scare when Annabel Sutherland dropped her at long-on, but Jess Jonassen soon dismissed Perry, with Litchfield completing the catch.

Emma Lamb was the other main contributor, making 47, but Phoenix kept losing wickets and could not build any useful partnerships. Their innings faded badly at the finish, with the hosts scoring only 18 runs while losing five wickets from the final 20 balls.

The total of 107/9 never seemed enough for Birmingham Phoenix to win the match. Sunrisers’ bowling attack kept the scoring under control throughout. Kate Cross took two wickets, while Deepti Sharma, Sutherland and Jonassen all bowled economically to keep Phoenix restricted despite a decent batting pitch.

Litchfield Leads Sunrisers to Comfortable Win

Litchfield’s aggressive approach quickly put Sunrisers Leeds in control of the chase. She went after the bowlers from the beginning, using sweeps and switch-hits to race to a record fifty before ending unbeaten on 71 from only 33 balls.

Following the loss of Bryony Smith for 12, Lauren Winfield-Hill anchored the chase with an unbeaten 26 off 27 balls. With Winfield-Hill at the non-striker’s end, Litchfield hit a six off the 69th ball to finish the chase, guiding Sunrisers Leeds to 111 for 1 to secure a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Birmingham Phoenix.
