Mumbai Indians made it a night to remember at Wankhede. In the 47th match of IPL 2026, they defeated Lucknow Super Giants by six wickets with eight balls to spare. Chasing 229 runs seems like a tall order, but MI’s batsmen have made it look easy. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton open the innings and LSG bowl everything except the first ball. The crowd cheers and never lets the pressure build up at home.
Lucknow Super Giants bat first and get off to a strong start. Mitchell Marsh hits the ball hard right from the start. Josh Inglis falls cheaply but Nicholas Pooran comes in and changes everything. Pooran hits eight sixes in 21 balls and looks like a man from a different planet. LSG make a huge score of 228 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs. For a while, it looks like MI actually have a real task ahead of them.
But Rohit Sharma has other ideas. He goes to bat and starts playing his shots straight away. Rickelton matches his shot for shot. The two put on a 143-run partnership in just 65 balls – an opening partnership that takes the game away from LSG completely. Rickelton is dismissed for 83 off 32 balls, but Rohit goes on and scores a final 84 off 44 balls to win the match. Naman Dhir and Will Jacks complete the win without any trouble. MI crossed the line with 8 balls to spare.
The win is crucial for MI in the points table race. It’s a team performance but Rohit Sharma’s explosive return to form is the biggest talking point of the evening. CricketBites brings you the full story – turning points, full scorecard, key stats and much more.

Rohit comes into the field under pressure and takes complete control. He tiles the ball perfectly and hits it to all parts of the field. His partnership with Rickelton decides the win even before the middle overs come. Mumbai can’t ask for anything more from their veteran opener.
After Josh Inglis got out early, Nicholas Pooran bowled at number three. He showed no respect for any bowler. He hit Will Jacks for three sixes in a single over and then scored 16 runs off Ghazanfar. He completed his half-century in just 16 balls – the fastest half-century in IPL history. He hit a total of eight sixes and scored 63 runs in 21 balls. In the powerplay, LSG scored 90 runs for 1 wicket – their best powerplay score in IPL history. Meanwhile, Mumbai’s bowlers looked helpless.
Just when it looks like LSG might cross 260, Corbin Bosh comes forward. He takes the wickets of both Mitchell Marsh (44 off 25 balls) and Nicholas Pooran (63 off 21 balls). Marsh makes 44 and Pooran follows him immediately. The scoreboard shows 123 for 2 and then 125 for 3 in a few balls. LSG lose their two biggest hitters and the run rate slows down. MI bring LSG back down to earth and the final score of 228 is good but not as scary as it could have been.
This is the moment when the game ends competitively. Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton come out and start hitting from the very first ball. They play no defensive cricket. Every bad ball seems to have a four or a six. Rickelton scores 83 runs in just 32 balls before he is dismissed. Rohit continues to bat and completes 80 runs. Their opening partnership of 143 runs comes in just 65 balls. LSG’s bowlers have no answer. The chase of 229 runs never feels like a chase during this partnership.
After Rohit got out for 84, MI still needed a few more runs. Suryakumar Yadav opens but he can’t get going. Naman Dheer comes in and hits clean. Will Jacks finishes the job. MI crossed the line with eight balls to spare in the 19th over. There was no drama in the end. Dheer and Jacks maintained their calm demeanor and got the job done. MI won by 6 wickets.

Note: Head-to-head data updated after IPL 2026 Match 47. LSG first appeared in IPL 2022.
Mumbai Indians needed this win and they got it in a magnificent manner. It is not easy for anyone to chase 229 runs. But the Rohit-Rickelton partnership makes it look like a practice game. That is what MI do when they are at their best – their top two batsmen take over and everything else becomes easy. The bowlers worked strongly in the second half of LSG’s innings to bring the total below 260.
Rohit Sharma’s form is the biggest story of this match. There are times in the IPL when Rohit goes quiet. But today he answered every question. He hits with power, reads the field well and runs between the wickets with intelligence. This innings reminded everyone why he is one of the best white-ball batsmen in the world.
LSG’s batsmen are brilliant but they can’t keep it together throughout the match. Pooran’s innings are beautiful to watch but it also puts pressure on the batsmen who come after him. When Pooran and Marsh get out quickly, the run rate slows down and LSG fall behind by 20-30 runs. Their bowlers try hard to chase but it is impossible to fight back from an opening partnership of 143 runs in 65 balls. LSG need to find a way to sustain their excellent partnership for a long time.
This is one of the most entertaining matches of IPL 2026 so far. Both the teams gave the audience a wonderful night of cricket. But MI’s batting depth and Rohit Sharma’s talent made the difference that night. LSG gave MI a big push in the first innings, but MI answered every question in style in the second innings. At Wankhede, it is almost impossible to beat Mumbai when Rohit is performing brilliantly.
