After Virat Kohli helped Royal Challengers Bengaluru to a historic win for the Indian Premier League title in 2025, the star batsman made the team’s goal for the new season very clear: to win it again. This time, the dream is bigger – to lift the trophy in front of their home crowd at the famous M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.
However, things are not entirely smooth sailing for RCB as the 2026 season approaches. The tragic stampede and chaotic scenes that took place earlier during the title celebrations forced the Karnataka State Cricket Association to temporarily suspend the stadium as an international venue. Due to this situation, despite India’s successful domestic campaign, the ground missed out on hosting matches during the women’s ODI and men’s T20I World Cup events.
However, there is still uncertainty over whether IPL matches will be held at the same venue from where the celebrations began. In its official update, the Board of Control for Cricket in India shared an important clarification.
“The matches to be held in Bengaluru are subject to the approval of an expert committee constituted by the Karnataka government. The committee will visit and inspect the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on March 13, 2026, during which a full-scale mock demonstration of the match-day arrangements will be conducted to assess whether the stadium is ready to host IPL matches or not.”
With this in mind, the defending champions will still continue the long-standing tradition of the tournament and start the new IPL season. Their first match will be played against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 28, which will be a thrilling encounter filled with powerful players from both sides.
After a short gap of eight days at the beginning of their schedule, RCB will host one of the most exciting rivalries in the IPL. The much-talked-about Great Southern Derby comes when Chennai Super Kings travel to Bengaluru. With the legendary clash between MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli just around the corner, fans won’t want to miss this blockbuster battle.
