Shane Watson’s Early Career

Not many people know that Shane Watson actually began his professional journey in Tasmania. Although he was raised in Queensland, he spent time at the Australian Cricket Academy. There, coach Greg Schipper spotted his talent and helped him move to Tasmania so he could play domestic cricket for the state. Early in his youth career, he also played in the 2000 Under-19 ICC Cricket World Cup. During that tournament, he shared the dressing room with many players who later became big names in Australian cricket, such as Michael Clarke, Shaun Marsh, Nathan Hauritz, Ed Cowan, Andrew McDonald and Mitchell Johnson.

The big moment came on 22 March 2002 when he made his One Day International debut against South Africa. From that day on, he gradually built an impressive cricketing career and added many achievements to his name. The selectors noted his strong performances in ‘A’ level matches and county cricket before giving him a place in the Australian international team. His powerful batting, sharp fielding and useful medium-pace bowling helped him earn a place in the Australian Test team.
