Tanzania Cricket Reaches New Milestone as Jay Shah Inaugurates TCA Arena

Tanzania cricket achieved a historic milestone. ICC Chairman Jay Shah inaugurated the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) Arena in Dar es Salaam. The venue has become the country’s first ICC-approved cricket stadium. This makes a huge step in the development of cricket in Tanzania and the wider African region.

The inauguration came at a crucial time. Tanzania set to host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B 2026 from August 8 to 18. The newly built TCA Arena will aid as the primary venue.

 Jay Shah Opens Tanzania’s First ICC-Approved Cricket Stadium 

The inauguration ceremony took place on August 2, 2026. The venue was at the University of Dar es Salaam. The event was attended by ICC Board Directors, Tanzania government officials, representatives from the Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA), and members of the international cricket community. 

Jay Shah praised Tanzania Cricket’s efforts in creating world-class infrastructure, while speaking during the ceremony.

“The inauguration of the TCA Arena is a significant milestone for cricket in Tanzania. The progress made by the Tanzania Cricket Association is remarkable and this venue represents an exciting future for cricket in Tanzania and the wider African region,” Shah said.

 TCA Arena to Boost Cricket Development 

The new TCA Arena is expected to play an important role in growing cricket across Tanzania by providing a permanent international-standard venue for:

• ICC pathway tournaments

• National team training camps

• Grassroots cricket programs

• Coach and umpire education

• Talent identification initiatives

• Community cricket activities

The stadium will also strengthen Tanzania’s ability to host international cricket events in future.

 Journey from Vision to Reality 

The project began in October 2024. This was when the University of Dar es Salaam allocated land for the stadium.

 Timeline of the Project 

The entire project was completed in less than two years, making it one of the fastest major cricket infrastructure developments among ICC Associate Members.

 Tanzania Set to Host ICC Challenge League B 

The timing of the inauguration is particularly significant because Tanzania will shortly host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Challenge League B 2026, an important tournament on the qualification pathway toward the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. Hosting the event at the new stadium is expected to increase international exposure for Tanzanian cricket while giving local players valuable experience competing at home.

 TCA Chairman Calls It a Defining Moment 

Tanzania Cricket Association Chairman Dr. B.S. Sreekumar described the opening  as an achievement for the nation’s cricketing future. He said, the TCA Arena is much more than a cricket ground. It represents a long-term vision to develop players, attract international tournaments, and inspire future generations across Tanzania. He also thanked the ICC, the Tanzanian government, the University of Dar es Salaam, sponsors, and everyone involved in making the project a reality.

 A Boost for African Cricket 

Opening of the first-ever ICC-accredited cricket stadium in Tanzania shows that ICC continues its efforts to expand the reach of the game to places other than those that play cricket regularly. It has improved infrastructure and regular international events. this positions Tanzania itself as one of East Africa’s emerging cricket destinations. The TCA Arena is expected to help develop players, officials, and coaches while encouraging greater participation in schools and local communities.
