Rishabh Pant has again shown why he is one of the most lethal wicketkeeper-batters in Test cricket. The Indian star created history on Tuesday, August 18. it was during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle by becoming the first Indian batter to hit 100 sixes in Test cricket.

Pant reached the landmark in the second innings, smashing two sixes during his aggressive 66 off 69 balls. His achievement also placed him among an exclusive group of batters who have crossed the three-figure mark for Test sixes.

Pant Becomes Fastest to 100 Test Sixes

The milestone was special not only because Pant became the first Indian to achieve it, but also because he reached it faster than anyone before him. Pant brought up his 100th six in his 51st Test, doing so in just 89 innings. More significantly, reports indicate that he needed only 4,918 balls to reach the landmark, surpassing the previous record held by former Australia wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist.

The record underlines just how aggressively Pant has approached Test batting throughout his career. Six-hitting is usually associated with limited-overs cricket. Yet, Pant has brought that attacking mentality into the longest format.

Fourth Player in Test History to Reach the Landmark

Pant’s achievement also puts him in elite company. Before the Indian wicketkeeper, only Ben Stokes, Brendon McCullum and Adam Gilchrist had reached 100 Test sixes. Pant is therefore just the fourth batter in Test history to achieve the feat.

His achievement is particularly significant for Indian cricket. Virender Sehwag previously held India’s record for Test sixes, with 91. But Pant has now moved beyond that mark. He established a new benchmark for Indian batters.

Another Chapter in Pant’s Remarkable Test Career

Pant’s Test career has been anything but run-of-the-mill. Ever since his debut, the man has built a name for himself by virtue of being a game-changer through his aggressive strokeplay, besides delivering vital performances under pressure. His Test comeback after a serious accident was another defining moment. In 2024, Pant returned to the format against Bangladesh and scored a century, equalling MS Dhoni’s record of six Test hundreds by an Indian wicketkeeper at the time. He has since moved ahead of Dhoni in that category as well.

His latest milestone adds another precious achievement to that growing list.

Pant’s Six-Hitting Sets Him Apart

Pant’s ability to clear the boundary against both pace and spin has become a feature of his batting. Yet, his six-hitting is not about simply entertainment. It allows him to change the momentum of a Test match within a few overs. That approach was again visible in Galle. After scoring 39 in India’s first innings, Pant responded with a rapid 66 in the second, helping India set Sri Lanka a challenging target.

At just 28 years old, Pant still has plenty of Test cricket ahead of him. With 100 sixes already behind his name, the next question is how far he can push the record.

A New Benchmark for Indian Cricket

Rishabh Pant’s 100th Test six is more than another personal statistic. It represents a shift in how modern Indian batters can approach Test cricket. From breaking wicketkeeper-batting records to becoming the fastest player to 100 Test sixes, Pant continues to build a legacy based on fearless cricket. He has plenty of matches still left in his career. 100 sixes may only be the beginning of another extraordinary Test record.

As always, Cricbites will continue tracking every milestone in the rise of India’s newest cricket sensation.
