Australia have made a significant change to their batting lineup ahead of the second Test against Bangladesh, dropping opener Jake Weatherald and recalling Matt Renshaw to the 13-man squad.

The decision comes after Australia suffered a shock nine-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in the opening Test in Darwin. The second and final Test of the series will be played at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in Mackay from August 22 to 26.

Weatherald Pays the Price for Poor Start

Weatherald’s brief run at the top of Australia’s Test order has come to an end, at least for now. The left-hander struggled in Darwin, scoring only 23 in the first innings before being dismissed for a duck in the second. Those performances added to concerns surrounding his place in the side. Across his first six Tests, Weatherald has averaged just 20.36, making his omission a relatively straightforward call for the selectors following Australia’s disappointing defeat.

The 31-year-old had initially earned the backing of Australia’s selectors after a productive domestic campaign and was handed a full Cricket Australia contract for the 2026-27 season. However, selectors had previously stressed that the contract was not a guarantee of a permanent Test position.

Matt Renshaw Earns Test Recall

Replacing Weatherald is Queensland batter Matt Renshaw, who returns to Australia’s Test squad after an absence of more than three years. Renshaw last played Test cricket during Australia’s tour of India in 2023. Since then, he has remained in contention through his performances at domestic level.

His Sheffield Shield numbers from the 2025-26 season braced his case. Matt Renshaw secured 499 runs. That was through six matches at an average of 49.90. This includes three centuries. That consistency has now earned him another opportunity in the Test setup.

Renshaw Likely to Open With Travis Head

The biggest question ahead of the Mackay Test is how Australia will structure its top order. Renshaw is expected to move into the opening position alongside Travis Head, with the rest of the 13-man squad unchanged. His experience at Test level could provide Australia with greater stability after the top order struggled in Darwin.

Renshaw already has 14 Test appearances to his name and a Test ceAll Postsntury, having announced himself at international level with a hundred against Pakistan as a young player. His recall therefore gives Australia an experienced option rather than an untested replacement.

Labuschagne Retains His Place

While Weatherald has been dropped, Marnus Labuschagne has retained his spot in the squad despite also coming under pressure. Labuschagne managed only 32 runs across the Darwin Test, but Australia’s coaching staff have opted to give him another opportunity at No. 3. Head coach Andrew McDonald has acknowledged the need for Labuschagne to produce more substantial contributions.

The decision suggests Australia’s selectors are looking for stability rather than making wholesale changes after one poor Test.

Australia Need a Response in Mackay

The changes come at a crucial moment for Australia. Bangladesh’s nine-wicket victory in Darwin was a major upset and gave the visitors a 1-0 lead in the two-match series. Australia must now win in Mackay to prevent Bangladesh from completing a historic series victory. For Renshaw, meanwhile, the match represents an important opportunity to re-establish himself in the Test setup.

With Weatherald dropped and Renshaw back in contention, Australia’s opening combination will be one of the major talking points when the second Test begins on August 22.
