On August 16, India ended the rain-hit second day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle at 460 for 9. Devdutt Padikkal scored a brilliant 167, while Dhruv Jurel added a vital 51 to keep India in a strong position despite a spirited fightback from Sri Lanka’s spin attack.

Rain Delays Start in Galle

Rain and a wet outfield delayed the start of play by nearly 5 hours. India resumed on 288 for 2 and Rishabh Pant got going by pulling a short ball through the midwicket region for a boundary. India moved safely through the opening half-hour and crossed the 200-run mark.
However, Pant could not add much to his overnight score and was dismissed after the second new ball was introduced. Trying to attack Nuwantha, he stepped out but mistimed the delivery towards the mid-off fielder.

KL Rahul, who had retired hurt on August 15 due to cramps, returned to the crease but added only 5 runs before he flicked a turning delivery from Nuwantha straight to short leg.

Sri Lanka Fight Back with Spin

Sri Lanka slowly began to regain control with disciplined bowling after the new ball was taken, picking up wickets at regular intervals. Padikkal had looked comfortable on a surface that remained mostly predictable, but his impressive innings ended when he appeared set for an even bigger score.

Prabath Jayasuriya was brought back into the attack and got the breakthrough. Padikkal came down the track but missed the quicker delivery and was stumped for 167.

India’s problems increased when Jadeja was given out leg-before while playing down the wrong line against Nuwantha. This left India at 377 for 6 after 3 wickets had fallen in the second session. Things could have become worse, but Dhananjaya de Silva put down Jurel at slip when the batter was on 29.

Jurel and Suthar Steady India

Sri Lanka had pulled the game closer, but Jurel and Manav Suthar made them work hard towards the end of the day. The pair took advantage of Lahiru Kumara’s loose bowling, hitting 3 boundaries in an over to take India beyond 400. They then showed good patience to put together a 55-run partnership on a pitch that offered plenty of turn but did not have too many difficult patches.
Dhananjaya made amends for the earlier drop by taking a brilliant catch at slip to dismiss Jurel shortly after he reached his half-century. The lower order could not add many runs, although Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav managed a few useful runs.

More importantly, India left Sri Lanka with only 1 wicket to take before they could begin their own innings. With only 3 days remaining and more rain expected, India will also need to score quickly if they are to give themselves enough time to push for a win.
