BBL Transfer Race Heats Up as Overseas Stars Attract Huge Interest

The Big Bash League transfer market is heating up as the overseas player market shifts toward direct signings. A bidding battle is building in the Big Bash League, with former England Test captain Ben Stokes and New Zealand power-hitter Finn Allen in the race to become the competition’s highest-paid signing ever.

Ben Stokes Emerges as Top BBL Target

The interest in Stokes and Allen comes after Code Sports reported last week that the recently retired England all-rounder is expected to play in Australia’s domestic T20 competition this summer.

The Sydney Sixers are believed to be leading the race for Stokes, although a number of other franchises are also showing interest. The Hobart Hurricanes are among them after Cricket Tasmania chief Dom Baker said last month the club would like to bring Stokes to Tasmania. Even so, an old England connection appears to have put the Sixers in a strong position.

Former England white-ball coach and ex-Australian women’s coach Matthew Mott recently took over from Greg Shipperd. Mott and Stokes were part of England’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign in Australia in 2022, with Stokes making an unbeaten 52 in the final against Pakistan at the MCG to seal a five-wicket victory.

Stokes has played in the BBL before, representing the Melbourne Renegades during the 2014/15 season. Since retiring from international cricket, his schedule has become more open, giving him the chance to return to the tournament after more than 10 years. However, questions remain over whether a deal can be completed because he may want to spend Christmas at home, while the financially rewarding SA20 begins in January.

Proposed Rule Changes Could Reshape BBL Recruitment

Despite that, Australian cricket officials are said to be confident of bringing Stokes to the BBL. They believe he is open to playing at least part of the tournament. There is also growing talk within cricket that Stokes could become the biggest signing in BBL history.

For now, clubs are unable to finalise deals as Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association continue discussions over changes to player list rules. One of the proposals being discussed is the removal of the BBL overseas player draft.

If that happens, Stokes and other overseas stars would be able to sign directly with clubs on deals believed to be worth more than $300,000. Teams are also expected to have a marquee player fund of about $1.375 million to recruit four star players, with at least one overseas player and one Australian included.

Stokes and Allen are not the only overseas stars attracting strong interest ahead of the upcoming season. New Zealand duo Tim Seifert, and Lockie Ferguson are also reportedly in demand, along with England fast bowler Jamie Overton.

New System Could Trigger Intense Competition

The proposed changes are aimed at helping Australia’s leading players earn more in their own domestic competition and reducing the pull of leagues such as the SA20 and the UAE’s ILT20. Another expected result of the new system is increased competition between BBL clubs to sign top players.

The traditional overseas player draft is making way for direct club negotiations, allowing franchises to table lucrative packages well past previous platinum thresholds. Clubs are willing to break financial records to secure global box-office talent, making prospective deals like Stokes’s some of the richest in BBL history.
