Gujarat Titans win the toss and ask Chennai Super Kings to bat first. This turns out to be a very smart decision.
From the very first ball, everything goes wrong for CSK. Kagiso Rabada runs fast and bowls with a lot of pace and bounce. He takes wickets early and puts a lot of pressure on CSK. Sanju Samson comes in and scores 11 runs in 15 balls and is out. Urvil Patel scores just 4 runs in 3 balls. Then impact player Sarfaraz Khan comes in and gets out for a golden duck – a duck in one ball. CSK are sitting at just 26 runs for 3 wickets in 4.4 overs. The home team is very calm.
Dewald Brevis also fails to make a move. He scores just 2 runs in 9 balls and is out on Manav Suthar’s delivery. CSK are in serious trouble at 37 for 4 in 8.2 overs.
At this point, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad decides to bat deep. He bats very patiently and slowly starts building the innings. Shivam Dubey joins him and together they score 59 runs in just 43 balls.
Dubey scores 22 runs in 17 balls and keeps the run rate above six. Gaikwad himself is scoring 20 runs in 37 balls at one point – he takes his time, doesn’t panic, and then moves on smartly to complete his half-century in 49 balls.
Later, Kartik Sharma scores 15 runs in 9 balls and Jamie Overton scores 18 runs in just 6 balls to take CSK’s score past 150. Gaikwad remains unbeaten on 74 runs in 60 balls. He does everything right, but he doesn’t get enough support from others. CSK ends at 158/7 – this score looks down on this ground.

Gujarat Titans started their chase with a lot of confidence. Captain Shubman Gill and Sai Sudarshan opened the batting and got off to a great start. The pair added 58 runs in just 39 balls for the first wicket. Gill looked brilliant from the start. He hit some clean shots and after being stumped off Noor Ahmed in the 7th over, he scored 33 runs in 23 balls – including 1 four and 3 sixes.
After Gill’s dismissal, Jos Buttler comes in. And then comes the pure batting delight. Sudarshan and Buttler put on a massive 97-run partnership in just 60 balls for the second wicket. The Chepauk crowd could only watch as the Titans completely took the game away from CSK.
Sai Sudarshan is the star of the night. He bats as if he is playing a practice game in the garden – very calm, very clean and very powerful. He reaches his fifty in just 33 balls. He hits 4 fours and 7 sixes in his innings. His strike rate is an incredible 189.13. When GT needed just 4 runs to win, he was dismissed for 87 runs in 46 balls – caught by Dewald Brevis off Akil Hussain. Washington Sundar and Jos Buttler finished the job easily. Buttler remained unbeaten on 39 runs in 30 balls. GT crossed the line in 16.4 overs. They won by 8 wickets with 20 balls to spare. It was a complete and impressive performance.

Rabada destroys CSK Kagiso Rabada comes out in the very first over and bowls like a champion. His pace is sharp, his line is right, and he attacks the pitch with a vengeance. He takes 3 wickets for just 25 runs in 4 overs. CSK lose 3 wickets in the first 5 overs and never really recover. This spell is the turning point of the entire match.
Gaekwad fights hard but Ruturaj Gaekwad alone shows a lot of character. When wickets keep falling around him, he keeps calm and bats through the innings. His 74 runs in 60 balls is a brilliant innings, but he can’t do it alone. CSK score 158 – a total that is not enough to defend on this ground.
Sudarshan is simply brilliant Sai Sudarshan goes to bat and looks very much in touch immediately. He plays pull shots, straight drives, scoops – everything looks easy. The match becomes one-sided, he scores 87 runs in 46 balls at a strike rate of 189.13. He hits 7 sixes in the innings – almost one in every 6 balls. This is the reason why GT won so easily.
Sanju Samson makes IPL history. For CSK, Sanju Samson has become the fastest Indian batsman in IPL history to score 5,000 runs, even in a losing match. This is a proud moment for him.+
Kagiso Rabada – Gujarat Titans Rabada won the Player of the Match award. GT restricted CSK to just 158 runs with his bowling figures of 3 for 25 in 4 overs. He takes the wickets of Samson, Patel and Siraj (as a dominant player) in the powerplay and completely changes the mood of the match. When a bowler does that at the top of the innings, the whole game changes. That’s what Rabada did tonight.
Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans – winning captain) “Very happy with the win. It was a very good effort from us. I was a little unsure about the toss – batting or bowling – but we did it the right way. We bowled well in the powerplay. Sai is batting brilliantly. Once he gets set, he rewards you to the maximum.”
Ruturaj Gaikwad (Chennai Super Kings – losing captain) “I felt the game was challenging on the field. If we hadn’t lost so many wickets early on, we could have reached 170 to 180. The bounce was up and down. We couldn’t adapt today. We were sluggish early on and that hurt us. We needed a much better start as a batting unit.”

Gujarat Titans played almost perfect cricket tonight. Their bowlers do the job first, then their batsmen finish it without any trouble. CSK try hard – Gaekwad’s fighting fifty shows what heart looks like – but find it very difficult to repair the early damage in the Powerplay. Rabada’s spell and Sudarshan’s batting are two performances that fans will remember for a long time from this IPL 2026 season.
GT currently looks like one of the most complete teams in the tournament. CSK need to regroup quickly.
