The third ODI between England and India will be played at one of cricket’s most prestigious venues, Lord’s Cricket Ground. India lead the three-match ODI series 1-0 after winning the first match at Edgbaston by six wickets, when India will enter the field comfortably chasing 259 with 28 balls to spare at Birmingham.

England need a win in the second ODI in Cardiff on July 16 to stay alive and make the series decider at Lord’s. If they can do that, the third ODI at Lord’s Cricket Ground on July 19 will decide everything. The match will start at 10:00 AM local time and will conclude at 3:30 PM. England will renew their rivalry against India at a packed Lord’s on Sunday, July 19.

Key Insights

India

The return of India’s senior players has completely transformed the team for the T20I phase. Gurnoor Brar started England’s batting collapse by taking two wickets in the first ODI, which took England’s score from 61/0 to 80/5. Bumrah gave away just 31 runs in nine overs and became the highest run-scorer on the day. Axar Patel was India’s highest wicket-taker with 4 for 62.

The concern for India is Shubman Gill, who retired hurt after scoring 149 not out off Josh Tong, his fitness ahead of the second and third ODIs was the most important team news for the visitors. Washington Sundar came into the field with ease and KL Rahul showed calm hands to complete the chase.

Virat Kohli was dismissed for just 5 runs by Jofra Archer in the first ODI, but his class and hunger to play big innings at Lord’s is undeniable. Kohli averages 66.5 in ODI cricket at Lord’s and the home of cricket has consistently been one of its most productive overseas venues. India need their captain fit and their top three firing players to win the series on the game’s grandest ground.

England

England will welcome Joe Root back at one of their fortresses in Lord’s if the series reaches a decider. Root was their best batter in the first ODI, finishing unbeaten on 76 and sharing a 121 run seventh wicket stand with Liam Dawson to rescue England from 80/5 to 258. Dawson scored 61 and was England’s most important lower order contribution.

Jos Buttler played his 200th ODI at Edgbaston and England will want him in better form at Lord’s after being dismissed for 5 in the first game. Jacob Bethell was removed for 14 and England need him to fire alongside Duckett at the top if they want to post a total worth defending.

England need an urgent ODI turnaround as India eye a series win in Cardiff and the question of whether England will admit their selection error and pick a fourth seamer has dominated discussion since the Edgbaston defeat. Lord’s is England’s home in the truest sense and their record at the ground remains one of the strongest in world cricket.

Pitch Report: Lord’s Cricket Ground

The Lord’s pitch is famous for its 2.5 metre slope, which helps the seamers early in the match. The famous slope and typical English conditions give the surface a lot of speed early on, giving the seamers a clear advantage with the new ball.

Batting becomes easier as the innings progresses, while the spinners gain some grip later on. A first innings total of 280 to 300 should prove very competitive..

Toss Prediction

Lord’s’ slope and cloudy England July conditions make the new ball very tough, especially in the first ten overs. Lord’s curators prepare flat ODI surfaces but the famous slope plays a subtle role, helping to create swing and uneven bounce at one end, while smart bowlers use this to control the scoring rate.

Both captains know that early wickets at Lord’s create pressure that builds throughout the innings. England have historically chosen to bat first at Lord’s when given the choice, using the familiarity of the home ground to try to build a big score on the flat surface before it slows down.

Whoever wins the toss is likely to bat first. Setting 290 or more at Lord’s in an ODI makes chasing a real challenge, regardless of the quality of the team.

Match Prediction

India are leading the series and are a good team both batting and bowling. Bumrah is the only dangerous factor at Lord’s in cloudy weather in July, as both captains will face the new ball before this match.

Even if the series is after Cardiff, Lord’s offers England the best chance of winning because of the home conditions and the support of the crowd. But Kohli, Rohit and Bumrah play at a venue where their senior batsmen have historically had success, which is not easily broken.

Kohli’s record at Lord’s in ODI cricket makes him the most dangerous batsman on either side despite a poor start to the series. Whatever happens in Cardiff, India are slight favourites to win the series, but if England push for a decisive match at Lord’s, both teams will enter the match on a level playing field based on confidence and the toss could decide everything.
