Shubman Gill, 26, has retained the captaincy after a stellar performance across all formats, and his calm leadership style has earned him a lot of support in the team. Shreyas Iyer continues as vice-captain and also leads India’s T20I unit on the same tour, so the pair will share a lot of ideas before the ODI leg begins.
The three-match ODI series between India and England marks the end of this busy white-ball tour. The first ODI will be played at Edgbaston in Birmingham on July 14, the second ODI will be played under floodlights at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on July 16 and the series will conclude at the historic Lord’s in London on July 19.
India’s top order looks strong, with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill expected to open the innings. Rohit has regained his place after a brilliant 143 runs in the three ODIs against Afghanistan, putting an end to talk of an early exit from the format. Behind the openers, Shreyas Iyer, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul form an experienced middle order, while Ishan Kishan offers an additional left-handed option with the gloves.
Kuldeep Yadav is India’s most successful wicket-taker in the middle overs, and his left-arm wrist spin is becoming a headache for batsmen around the world. Jasprit Bumrah returns to the ODI team after being left out of the previous series, and he leads the pace department along with Arshdeep Singh, with Harshit Rana adding extra zip with the new ball. Gurnoor Brar earns his place thanks to a strong performance in the Afghanistan ODIs, while the renowned Krishna provides more depth in the pace department.
Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar give the team real flexibility down the order. They can change the course of a match with every bat or ball, and their presence allows the team management to field a long batting line-up without weakening the bowling attack.
Every team announcement has some selections that spark debate, and this team is no different. Yashasvi Jaiswal, who replaced Kohli during the Afghanistan series, failed to make it into the final selection despite scoring a century in that series. Mohammed Siraj and Mohammed Shami have also been left out, a clear sign that the selectors are reshaping their pace bowling plans ahead of the big tournament. Hardik Pandya is also out of the picture, his fitness still being monitored.
This India ODI team mixes the comfort of experienced bowlers like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli with the energy of young names like Nitish Kumar Reddy and Gurnoor Brar. Led by Shubman Gill and accompanied by Shreyas Iyer, India will enter the England ODI series this year, aiming to find their best combination ahead of the big battles to come.
