The stage is set for the IPL 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Gujarat Titans at the Narendra Modi Stadium. Both teams are in search of their second IPL title. But this final seems bigger than the trophy. It seems that Indian cricket is torn between two generations. On one side stands Virat Kohli, the king who endured Bangalore’s woes for almost two decades and finally won the trophy in 2025.
On the other side stands Shubman Gill, the prince. Indian cricket has started preparing for the future. King versus prince. Old empire versus new ruler. RCB is trying to do something that no team from Bangalore has ever done before, defend the IPL title. Only Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians have successfully gone two consecutive times in IPL history. Bangalore is now one win away from joining that club.
Meanwhile, Gujarat Titans are chasing a second title on home soil, exactly four years after winning their maiden IPL trophy in 2022. In just five seasons, Gujarat have already reached three IPL finals. The level of consistency is worrying for such a young franchise.
The head-to-head battle against RCB this season is currently going on at 2-1. Gujarat now have one last chance to level the score at 2-2 when the stakes are at their highest.
Royal Challengers Bangalore have been a cricket darling for years. Big stars, big voices and big heartbreaks. Every season ended with memes, disappointments and questions about mentality.
That changed in 2025. RCB finished IPL 2026 at the top of the table with 18 points and played like a team completely comfortable with the pressure. They no longer tolerate frustration. They have confidence.
That confidence exploded in Qualifier 1. Facing Gujarat Titans in Dharamsala, Bengaluru produced one of the most brutal playoff performances in IPL history. They scored 254 runs, the highest score ever in an IPL playoff match, and then crushed Gujarat by 92 runs.
Rajat Patidar played like a man. His unbeaten 93 runs included nine sixes off just 33 balls and completely dismantled Gujarat’s bowling attack. Virat Kohli scored 43 runs off 25 balls while Krunal Pandya scored 43 runs.
Jacob Duffy, Rasik Salam Dar and Bhuvneshwar Kumar tore apart Gujarat’s top order so badly that the chase almost came to a standstill inside the powerplay. GT fell to 51/5 at one stage while chasing 255 runs.
For a franchise that was once accused of collapsing in big matches, the turnaround has been astonishing.
RCB’s biggest strength is their batting firepower. Virat Kohli still enters the IPL final with the emotional weight of millions. Even at this stage of his career, he remains the heartbeat of Bengaluru.
Then comes Rajat Patidar, the quiet destroyer of IPL 2026. Patidar’s fearless batting has completely transformed RCB’s middle order. Devdutt Padikkal and Tim David provide more explosiveness, giving Bengaluru attacking options from the first ball to 120 balls.
The bowling has also quietly become championship-level. Josh Hazlewood’s surge has unsettled batsmen all season. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has dealt with pressured overs with terrifying composure while the exciting Salam Dar has emerged as one of the breakout bowlers of the tournament.
Ahmedabad is not just a place for Gujarat Titans. Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, they won the trophy in 2022. Now, under Shubman Gill’s leadership, they have a chance to create another historic night against their own people.
The Narendra Modi Stadium can be overwhelming when Gujarat pick up the pace. Boundaries feel like sudden earthquakes while wickets suddenly spread panic in the stands.
Despite a heavy defeat in Qualifier 1, the Titans are one of the most balanced teams in the tournament. Their batting combines timing with aggression while their bowling attack can still change the game in a few overs.
Then there is Shubman Gill. Gill’s century in Qualifier 2 against Rajasthan Royals was not just another innings. It was a statement. Chasing 215 in a knockout match, Gill scored 104 off 53 balls and put on a 167-run opening partnership that took Gujarat to another final. GT completed the 214-run chase in just 18.4 overs, the most successful chase in the franchise’s history. Prince enters the final in superb form.
Losing by 254 runs in the playoffs exposed every weakness they had managed to hide throughout the season. Their bowlers were worried while their batting looked sluggish.
The pace changes quickly in T20 cricket. One over can turn the tide while one catch can silence an entire stadium. Gujarat understand this better than most teams as knockout cricket has become part of their identity since entering the IPL in 2022.
Now they return home with revenge. And that is what makes this final dangerous for RCB. Because Gujarat no longer needs inspiration. Bengaluru has already given it to them. Sunday night now comes down to a big cricketing question.
Does the king defend his throne once again?
Or does the prince finally take over?

The pitch at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium looks like it was made for a final where the batsmen can take control all night. There’s real bounce, excellent carry and enough speed on the surface for clean hitting from the first ball. Fast bowlers may get some movement initially, but once the ball softens, stroke-play becomes brutal.
Chasing in Ahmedabad looks safer as the fog sets in late and the pitch becomes better for batting in the light. Both RCB and GT have strong batting depth, which makes chasing more attractive. The team that wins the toss will almost certainly bowl first and will rely on their hitters to handle the scoreboard pressure late in the night.
