Jasprit Bumrah ended IPL 2026 with shocking figures that no one would have ever expected at the start of IPL 2026. The Mumbai Indians fast bowler played 13 matches and bowled 49 overs throughout the season. Yet despite bowling regularly and maintaining a respectable economy rate, he refused to take a wicket.
By the end of the season, Bumrah had taken just four wickets. For most bowlers, that return would be disappointing. For a player widely regarded as one of the best T20 bowlers of his generation, it felt almost unbelievable.
The lack of success became an unwanted part of cricket history. Jasprit Bumrah ended the tournament with a bowling average of 102.5, which is officially the worst bowling average recorded by any bowler in T20 history who has bowled at least 40 overs in a single tournament.
These are the kind of statistics that seem impossible when paired with a player like Bumrah. Yet cricket has always been a game that refuses to respect prestige. Sometimes even the best players endure seasons they would rather forget.
Bumrah’s struggles didn’t exist in isolation. They were a reflection of the wider problems plaguing Mumbai Indians during IPL 2026. Over the years, Mumbai had built their bowling strategy on a simple principle. Be patient until Bumrah comes. Trust Bumrah when the pressure is on. Expect Bumrah to create breakthroughs when no one else can.
This formula has delivered trophies time and time again. Five IPL titles, numerous match-winning spells and years of dominance have made Bumrah the bowler that opponents fear most when Mumbai need a wicket.
That never really materialised this season. Without regular wickets from their main pacer, Mumbai often found themselves chasing games rather than controlling them. Opposing batsmen escaped more comfortably in the powerplay. Partnerships ran for long periods. The pace often slipped away from Mumbai.
Of course, Bumrah wasn’t entirely to blame for Mumbai’s disappointing campaign. Most of the experienced players struggled to deliver consistently throughout the season. Batting collapse, bowling inconsistency and missed opportunities – all contributed to Mumbai missing out on a strong finish.
Yet when a bowler like Bumrah can only take four wickets in the entire tournament, it naturally becomes impossible to ignore his impact.
According to Mumbai Indians head coach Mahela Jayawardene, Bumrah’s difficult season was largely influenced by the physical challenges that began before the start of IPL 2026.
Speaking ahead of Mumbai’s clash against Rajasthan Royals, Jayawardene revealed that Bumrah was dealing with an injury sustained during the T20 World Cup before the IPL season.
The franchise deliberately gave the fast bowler extra recovery time before bringing him back into the game. However, coming back from injury is rarely easy.
Jayawardene explained that the first four to five matches effectively became part of Bumrah’s recovery process. His pace dropped significantly compared to his usual standards, and the lack of complete sharpness affected his overall execution.
For fast bowlers, rhythm is everything. A slight drop in pace can change the length. A slight physical anxiety can affect confidence. A slight delay in execution can turn wickets into boundaries.
According to the Mumbai coach, these factors combined create a tough time for the star fast bowler. Even the best fast bowlers in the world need rhythm, confidence and complete fitness. Remove one piece from that equation and the difference will be immediately visible.

Despite the disappointing overall figures, Jayawardene insisted that there were positive signs towards the end of the campaign.
Bumrah gradually regained fitness and confidence, although his pace dropped to almost normal levels during the closing stages of the match. The coach believed that the last four to five games had shown an encouraging improvement compared to the start of the season.
Unfortunately for Mumbai Indians, that progress came when the campaign was already slipping. The wickets never came in significant numbers. The sharpness never fully returned. The season ended before Bumrah could fully rediscover the devastating form that has made him one of the most feared fast bowlers in world cricket.
A player who has made records over the years, IPL 2026 will be remembered for a record he would probably never choose to hold.
