Scorecard at a Glance

Toss

Hardik Pandya won the toss and decided to bowl first. He is happy with his team after defeating Gujarat Titans three days ago. Rohit Sharma is still not fit, so MI will go with the same XI. CSK brings Karthik Sharma into the playing XI.

This is the first time that MI vs CSK match is being played without Rohit Sharma or MS Dhoni in the playing XI. Both are big icons of this great rivalry.

CSK Innings: 207/6 in 20 Overs

CSK comes out to bat and they want to score big on this fast Wankhede surface. The ground is small. The boundaries are short. Every batter knows that big scores are possible here.

Powerplay (Overs 1–6): 72/2

CSK have made a really good start. They scored 72 runs in the first six overs. This is CSK’s best powerplay score against MS. Only once before, in 2015, have CSK scored more runs in the powerplay against Mumbai.

But the two wickets mean something important – captain Ruturaj Gaikwad is out early. Allah Ghazanfar got him out for 22 runs in the third over. This is a big blow as Gaikwad has been in very poor form this season. His highest score in IPL 2026 is just 28 runs.

Shivam Dubey also goes cheap. Ghazanfar got him out for just 5 runs in 8 balls. Dubey, known for hitting big sixes, has hit just five sixes in seven innings this IPL season. He is clearly not at his best.

Middle Overs (Overs 7–15): Samson Takes Control

After the first two wickets, CSK are at 122/4 at one point. The situation looks a bit shaky. But Sanju Samson is at the crease. He’s not afraid. He does not try to hit every ball out of the ground at the beginning. He reads the game intelligently.

Samson gets a good partner in Kartik Sharma (18). Both of them have added 43 runs for the fifth wicket. This partnership is very important as it gives Samson a chance to bat deep in the innings.
Ghazanfar also contributed 21 runs before Dewald Brewis took his wicket. Ghazanfar ended with 2/25 – the best figures for MI today.

Death Overs (Overs 16–20): Samson Explodes

Now Samson has gone completely shameless. He hit two sixes and a four in the last over of Krish Bhagat. Jamie Overton helped him in the end by scoring 15 runs in just 7 balls.

Samson got out after scoring 101* runs in 54 balls. He hit 10 fours and 6 sixes. This is his second century of IPL 2026. He reaches 100 runs and the whole team celebrates. CSK ends on 207/6 – a very big score on any ground.

MI Chase: 104 All Out in 19 Overs

CSK needs to bowl MI out for less than 208. They do much better than that. MI collapses for just 104 in 19 overs. The chase is practically over in the first three overs.

Powerplay (Overs 1–6): 11/3 — Chase Over Before It Starts

Aqeel Hussain comes in as an impressive player for CSK. This is a brilliant decision. He is a left-arm spinner and he breaks the MI top order like it was nothing.

In the first few overs, Hussain dismisses Danish Malevar and Naman Dhir. By the end of the third over, MI are at 11/3. The Wankhede crowd cannot believe what they are seeing.

Hussain bowls really skillfully. He uses his left-arm angle. He’s varies his pace. He bowls the right length every time. The MI batsmen have no answer.

Middle Overs: SKY and Tilak Fight Back

Only two MI batsmen can offer any real resistance. Suryakumar Yadav (36 off 30 balls) and Tilak Verma (37 off 29 balls) put on a 60-run stand. For a while, it looks like MI can at least cope with it.

But then Hosein comes back. He dismisses both Suryakumar and Tilak. MI start losing wickets rapidly again.

Noor Ahmed also bowls brilliantly. He takes two wickets on consecutive balls – dismissing Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford one after the other. MI’s middle and lower order can’t cope with the pressure.

End of the Chase

CSK’s pace bowlers finished the job. Gurjapaneet Singh took the last wicket of Jasprit Bumrah to bowl out MI for 104. Eight MI batsmen were dismissed in single figures. It was a complete team effort by CSK’s bowlers.

MI lost by 103 runs. It was Mumbai Indians’ biggest defeat by runs in the entire history of IPL.

Key Moments from the Match

First moment — Samson takes the game away (overs 15-20) CSK are at a blistering 122/4. But Samson is not tired yet. He refuses to play a single defensive shot. He attacks relentlessly. By the time the last ball of the innings is bowled, they are 101* off 54 balls. Wankhede is silent — not for MI, but in shock at Samson’s brilliance.

Second moment — Hosein’s first over (the first over of MI’s chase) The first over of the chase decides the match. Hosein comes around the wicket. He makes the ball drift and turn. Two wickets. 11/3 after three overs. Game over.

Third moment — Sky and Tilak’s 60-run stand Sky and Tilak batting together only gives MI fans hope. They add 60 runs and for a while a chase looks possible. But Hossain comes back and ends it all.

Fourth moment — Noor Ahmed’s double strike. Noor Ahmed takes two wickets in two consecutive balls. Hardik Pandya and Sherfane Rutherford both gone. MI’s lower order is now empty.

Player Highlights

Sanju Samson (CSK) — Player of the Match

Samson plays the innings of the match. He sees his captain Gaekwad go early. He sees Dube and Bruise getting bowled by Ghazanfar. He’s not afraid. He bowls slowly at first and then explodes in the last five overs. He has scored 101* runs in 54 balls with 10 fours and 6 sixes which has given CSK 207 runs. Without him, CSK would have definitely struggled.

After this innings, Samson has reached the third position in the IPL 2026 Orange Cap list.

Akeal Hosein (CSK) — 4/17 in 4 Overs

Hosein plays a complete supporting role. He comes into the field as an impressive player and completely destroys the MI top order. His 4/17 is one of the best bowling performances of IPL 2026. His smart use of left-arm spin and variations makes him so dangerous. MI batsmen have no plan against him.

Allah Ghazanfar (MI) — 2/25 in 4 Overs

Ghazanfar has been a bright spot for MI throughout the match. He bowls really intelligently in the powerplay. He takes two wickets and keeps the pressure on CSK. His figures of 2/25 are very good on this surface. But the rest of MI’s bowling attack is failing the team badly.

Tilak Varma (MI) — 37 off 29 balls

Tilak is the only MI batsman who tries to save the team from complete embarrassment. He put up a fight by scoring 37 runs in 29 balls. He plays really good shots. But once he gets out, the innings completely collapses.

Cricbites Match Insight

Cricbites Verdict: This is one of the most impressive wins of IPL 2026 so far. CSK come to Wankhede – MI’s home ground – and are in complete control of the game from start to finish. Samson is the hero with the bat. Hosein is the hero with the ball. MI have no answer for either of them. For CSK, this win gives them huge confidence and an improved net run rate. For MI, there are now serious questions about where their wins will come from.

Final Thoughts

This match is a lesson in how T20 cricket can swing completely in one player’s favour. Sanju Samson gets out with CSK in a bit of trouble and turns it into a match-winning innings. Then Aqil Hussain emerges as a dominant player and ends the chase before MI even starts.
Mumbai Indians fans come to Wankhede to watch their team bounce back. Instead, they witness one of the worst defeats in MI history. A 103-run defeat at home is not something to be forgotten.

For CSK, this win proves that even when Gaikwad and Dubey are not aggressive, Samson can single-handedly take the team to big scores. And when you have a bowler like Hussain who can take four wickets for just 17 runs, you can bowl out any team in the world.
