Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium is always a special place. The lights are blazing, every seat is packed and the pitch is always entertaining. The 24th match of IPL 2026 brings together Mumbai Indians and Punjab Kings, and this game provides everything you could want – a century, a record-breaking partnership and an impressive chase.
Punjab Kings won the toss and decided to bowl first. It was a smart decision on this ground, where chasing teams prefer to bowl in the second innings. And the gamble paid off big. PBKS chased down 196 runs in just 16.3 overs, winning by 7 wickets to keep their unbeaten record alive in IPL 2026.
Mumbai Indians are now in a very difficult position in the points table. With five matches remaining, they have only two points. The five-time champions need to find their best form very quickly.

Mumbai Indians open the batting and it doesn’t go well at all in the powerplay. Arshdeep Singh is brilliant from the very first ball. He keeps the new ball tight and uses the swing beautifully. In his second over, he takes two wickets in two balls – Ryan Rickelton goes first, and then Suryakumar Yadav returns without scoring a single run. Mumbai Indians are 12 for 2 in just 2.2 overs. The home crowd goes very quiet.
At that point Quinton de Kock takes over. He is playing his first match for MI this season after an injury, and he can really trust him. De Kock doesn’t panic. He takes his time in the powerplay and then starts hitting boundaries with great timing in the middle overs. Naman Dhir joins him and makes his quick 50. The two of them put on a massive 122-run partnership that brought Mumbai Indians back into the game. De Kock hit 10 fours and 7 sixes and remained unbeaten on 112 off just 60 balls. This is his third IPL century and also historic – he became the first foreigner to score 3 IPL centuries for MI.
Despite de Kock’s brilliant innings, PBKS bowled disciplinedly in the death overs. Arshdeep took his third wicket and took 3 for 22 in 4 overs. MI ended at 195 for 6 – a good total, but on this pitch, it’s not enough.
Punjab Kings start the chase at a very brisk pace. Priyansh Arya hits two boundaries quickly. But Allah Ghazanfar took two wickets for MI – first Arya goes, then Cooper Connolly is out. PBKS are 45 for 2 after 4.3 overs, and the match could be interesting.
Then Prabhasimran Singh and captain Shreyas Iyer come together, and everything changes. The two of them hit the ball to every part of the field. There is no bowler they cannot hit. They scored 139 runs in just 67 balls – one of the best partnerships you will see all season. Prabhasimran bats at a strike rate of over 200 and hits 11 boundaries. Shreyas Iyer hit four sixes and completed his half-century with a beautiful flick through mid-wicket. This is his third consecutive fifty this IPL season.
One of the best bowlers in the world, Jasprit Bumrah, remains wicketless in his 4 overs and gives away 41 runs. That tells you how well PBKS batted tonight. Shreyas was out for 66 while Naman Dhir took a brilliant diving catch, but by then the game was over. Prabhasimran Singh remained unbeaten on 80. Marcus Stoinis helps get the final run. PBKS wins with 21 balls in hand. It is a very impressive performance.
Arshdeep Strikes Twice in One Over
In the second over of the match, Arshdeep Singh takes two wickets in a row. Rickelton edges and Suryakumar Yadav is caught out at slips. Mumbai Indians have lost 2 wickets for 12 runs, and the middle order is under pressure. This is the moment when PBKS took control of the first innings and stopped MI from making 220+.
De Kock’s Homecoming Century
After the first two wickets, Quinton de Kock plays one of the best T20 innings you will ever see. He scores 112 runs in 60 balls and almost single-handedly puts MI in the match. Without this innings, MI would have reached close to 140. His 122-run partnership with Dheer took MI to 195.
Prabhsimran-Shreyas Partner Up to Smash 139
When PBKS scored 45 for 2, MI got a chance. But Prabhasimran and Shreyas refused to let MI come back. They scored 139 runs in 67 balls. Chasing this partnership feels like a training game. Even Bumrah can’t stop them. Once this partnership is over, the match is over.
“Confident and optimistic going forward. We are playing exceptionally. Prabhasimran has raised his level – he has maturity and is finishing games. We have to be present and enjoy the moment.”
— Shreyas Iyer, PBKS captain (post-match)
“Honestly, I don’t have much to say. We need to go back and see where we have shortcomings – be it individuals, groups or planning – and work to overcome them. Take ownership.”
— Hardik Pandya, MI captain (post-match)
“It felt good. I had a good session yesterday and control is back. The conversation with Ricky was nothing technical – he just told me that I was expecting a lot from myself after winning the World Cup. That helped.”
— Arshdeep Singh, Player of the Match
This match produces some very special moments for the record books. Here’s what happens on a historic night at Wankhede in April:
Quinton de Kock scores his third IPL century, and becomes the first overseas player to score three IPL centuries while playing for Mumbai Indians. He does this in just 60 balls, which shows how devastating his batting is.
Arshdeep Singh takes his 100th wicket for Punjab Kings in the IPL. He is the first bowler to take 100 wickets for PBKS. This is a huge achievement for the young left-arm fast bowler who has been with the franchise for many years.
Shreyas Iyer scores his third consecutive half-century as PBKS captain in IPL 2026. He is stepping up both in batting and fielding – his relay catch with Xavier Bartlett to dismiss Hardik Pandya is also one of the most impressive fielding moments of the season.
Punjab Kings are unbeaten in IPL 2026 after five matches and have reached the top of the points table with 9 points.
