The Super Over serves as the official tie-breaking method for limited-overs cricket matches. The team that scores more runs in the Super Over wins the match. Bowlers have zero room for error with just six balls to bowl, while batters just swing for the fences from ball one.

Every now and then, that fearless hitting leads to some absolutely massive scores in super overs. Let us dive into some of the most expensive Super Overs we have ever seen in cricket history.

1. West Indies conceded 30 runs vs Netherlands (ODI, 2023)

That match between the West Indies and the Netherlands in the World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe was easily one of the craziest thrillers we have seen in years. During the group-stage game, the Windies piled up 374 and expected it to be a comfortable win. However, the Netherlands had other plans.

The Dutch came within touching distance but Alzarri Joseph took two wickets to to force the match into a Super Over. Logan van Beek walked out with captain Scott Edwards to face the experienced Jason Holder. Right from the opening ball, the pair showed they were going after everything. Van Beek produced one of the finest Super Over performances, smashing almost every delivery to the boundary. Holder had no answers as the over finished with 4, 6, 4, 6, 6, 4.

The contest was almost decided there. West Indies could only manage 8 runs while losing two wickets. It was a memorable win that gave the Netherlands a huge confidence boost and turned into one of the standout matches of the ICC CWC Qualifier.

2. New Zealand conceded 25 runs vs West Indies (T20I, 2008)

This was the first-ever Super Over in T20I cricket. Chasing 156, West Indies fell just one run short. Chris Gayle almost carried the team on his own, taking two wickets before scoring 67 with the bat. Even that wasn’t enough to finish the job in the regular 20 overs.

The Super Over, however, belonged to Gayle. He opened with a six off Daniel Vettori over deep midwicket. Soon after, his partner Xavier Marshall, who has also featured on this list while representing the USA, was run out. With another wicket ending the innings, the pressure was on.

Gayle responded in typical fashion, smashing 18 runs from the last four deliveries. The crowd rose to applaud his effort. Chasing 26 in six balls was always going to be a huge task at that time. New Zealand eventually lost two wickets and still had two balls left unused. The match also marked the beginning of a new chapter in T20 cricket that fans continue to enjoy today.

3. Canada conceded 22 runs vs USA (T20I, 2021)

A match between Canada and the United States produced a 22-run Super Over during the 2021 T20 World Cup American Region Qualifier in Antigua. USA were chasing 142 and managed to finish level with Canada.

They carried that momentum into the Super Over. Steven Taylor and Xavier Marshall came out to face Matharu. Taylor struck back-to-back sixes before losing his wicket. Marshall then finished the over with two boundaries in a row.

USA finished with 22 runs in the Super Over and later completed an easy eight-run victory. It was an impressive comeback after they had been under pressure earlier in the match. They’d been in trouble at one point, but they posted a record super-over total to take the match.

4. New Zealand conceded 20 runs vs India (T20I, 2020)

India’s 2020 tour of New Zealand produced two thrilling finishes in successive T20Is. In the third match at Hamilton, India batted first and scored 179. New Zealand looked to be in control for most of the chase before Mohammed Shami’s brilliant final over took the game into a Super Over.

Kane Williamson started by taking on Jasprit Bumrah and collected 10 runs from the first two balls. Martin Guptill then added a boundary off the final delivery to push the total to 17.

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul walked out for India’s chase. Getting 18 runs in six balls in New Zealand was never going to be easy. After four deliveries, New Zealand looked to be in command. Then came the dramatic finish. India needed 10 from the last two balls, and Rohit launched consecutive sixes to seal both the match and the series. India finished with 20 runs in the Super Over.

5. Bahrain conceded 19 runs vs Kuwait (T20I, 2022)

In August 2022, Bahrain travelled to Oman for a five-match T20I series against Kuwait. The opening match itself ended in a Super Over. Kuwait batted first and made 166. During the chase, Bahrain slipped to 96 for 5 after 14 overs before David Mathias and Haider Butt put together an excellent partnership to level the scores and force a Super Over.

Kuwait took full control in the one-over contest, scoring 19 runs to leave Bahrain with a difficult target. Chasing 20 from six balls was always going to be tough. Kuwait successfully defended the total, with Bahrain falling 11 runs short.
