Early Life and Background
Riyan’s father, Parag Das, has played first-class cricket for Assam, Railways, Dighalipukhuri and East Zone. Parag Das and former India captain MS Dhoni have competed together in Railways events in Guwahati and Kharagpur.
They also played against each other when Dhoni represented Jharkhand in Ranji Trophy matches. When Riyan entered the IPL, Dhoni was the captain of the opposing team and also did wicketkeeping.
His mother, Mithu Barua, holds the national record in the 50-metre freestyle and has represented India in the SAF Games and the Asian Championships.
A major turning point in her life came in 1985 when she won a silver medal in the 50-metre breaststroke at the Asian Age Group Championships, a unique achievement for any Assamese swimmer, male or female.

Riyan Parag’s Cricket Career
IPL Career
During his IPL journey with Rajasthan Royals, he has consistently made a name for himself as a rising star in the league. In 2019, he grabbed attention by becoming the youngest player to score a half-century in the IPL, displaying a confidence far beyond his age. He continued to develop as a key batsman and had a strong showing in 2024, where he scored 573 runs in a single season and proved his consistency. In 2025, he created a thrilling moment for the fans by hitting six consecutive sixes in a match, highlighting his fearless approach. In the same year, he also stepped up to lead the team as the acting captain of Rajasthan Royals, showcasing his leadership qualities and commitment to the team.
Domestic Career
At the age of fourteen, Riyan was set to become one of the youngest players to make his first-class debut in India, but the Assam selectors disagreed with the then state coach Sanath Kumar.
Riyan later made his Twenty20 debut for Assam on 29 January 2017 during the 2016–17 Inter-State Twenty20 tournament.
He made his first-class debut on 17 November 2017, representing Assam in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. With this match, he became the first Indian cricketer born in the 21st century to play first-class cricket.
He was the highest run-scorer for Assam in the 2018–19 Vijay Hazare Trophy, scoring 248 runs in seven matches.
Riyan is credited with playing a key role in leading Assam to the semi-finals of both the 2022–23 Vijay Hazare Trophy and the 2023–24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, as well as contributing to the East Zone’s performance in the final of the 2023 Deodhar Trophy.
During the 2022–23 Vijay Hazare Trophy, he was Assam’s highest run-scorer and finished fifth overall in the tournament, scoring 552 runs at an average of 69, including three centuries and one half-century.
Batting at number four, he scored a blistering century against Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir and Sikkim, as well as an unbeaten half-century against Vidarbha. He also took ten wickets with leg-break bowling that season.
In the quarter-final match against Jammu and Kashmir, while chasing a huge target of 351, he scored 174 runs in 116 balls, an innings that included twelve sixes and twelve fours.
In the group stage match against Hyderabad of the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy first-class tournament, Riyan scored 78 runs in just 28 balls in the second innings and also took eight wickets throughout the match with his leg-break bowling, which led his team to an 18-run victory.
Under 19 Career
In 2017, he was selected in the Indian Under-19 team for two youth Test matches in England. He became India’s second-highest run-scorer in youth Tests after Prithvi Shaw.
His two half-centuries in the first match, including a quick half-century off just 33 balls – the second-fastest half-century in documented youth Test history after Virat Kohli – helped India to a 334-run victory at Chesterfield.
In the second Test, when India were struggling to score runs quickly, he shared a 131-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Shubman Gill to win the series 2–0.
Prior to this tour, he had a very good season, finishing as the second highest run-scorer in the 2016–17 Cooch Behar Trophy, a national four-day competition for the India under-19 team, where he scored 642 runs in 14 innings, with his highest score being 202 not out.
In 2017, Riyan was selected for the India A team in the India Under-19 Challenger Trophy, where he was the tournament’s top scorer.
In December 2017, he was selected for India’s 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup squad. At the time, India’s under-19 coach, Rahul Dravid, said that he was in excellent form and was hitting the ball well in practice, but unfortunately, he was injured.
Due to a finger injury, Parag was unable to play in the opening matches of the tournament and was in the playing XI only for the final group match against Zimbabwe. Despite suffering a fractured finger during the warm-up matches, he participated in the later stages of the tournament.
The injury to his left hand affected his batting. Therefore, he focused on developing other skills and became an off-spin bowler.
International Cricket Career
Riyan Parag made his international debut in 2024, on 6 July, by playing his first T20 International match against Zimbabwe. Later in August 2024, he played his ODI match against Sri Lanka. In that match, he impressed everyone by taking three wickets.
He also created history by becoming the first male cricketer from Assam to play for India at the senior international level. He is still at the beginning of his international journey, but so far, he has shown strong potential as a middle-order batsman.
