Match Overview
What a fun night it was in Jaipur. Delhi Capitals completed their most successful run chase in IPL history, chasing a mammoth target of 226 against Rajasthan Royals with five balls to spare. The total in both innings was 451 – a complete batting carnival from start to finish.
Delhi Capitals ended their losing streak and returned to winning ways. Mitchell Starc set everything up as soon as he returned. DC took the early wickets with the ball but couldn’t finish it, and the batsmen made a big breakthrough. Nishank and Rahul laid the foundation together, while Nitish Rana added extra pace before Stubbs and Ashutosh finished the game.
Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag won the toss and decided to bat first. He felt the pitch was dry and grassy. Despite the strong wind at the time of the toss, he felt comfortable as the dew was not a factor.
Rajasthan Royals came into this match full of confidence. They had played well in recent matches and their batting line-up looked strong on paper. But the night did not start as they had hoped.
The first ball of the match was memorable. Yashasvi Jaiswal hit a straight six into the stands. But just two balls later, Mitchell Starc, returning from a shoulder injury, surprised Jaiswal by hitting a high full-toss. Jaiswal took a big swing but only got the top edge. The ball went up, and Starc calmly completed the return catch himself. Jaiswal returned after scoring 6 runs off just 3 balls.
The situation got worse in the next over. Kyle Jamieson bowled a low full-toss and Vaibhav Suryavanshi tried to dig it out but it only hit the stumps under-edge. RR lost both their attacking openers for just 12 runs.
But Rajasthan Royals remained unbeaten. Captain Ryan Parag and wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel turned the innings around with a brilliant 102-run partnership. Parag was in fine form, hitting 8 fours and 5 sixes in just 50 balls before he scored 90 in 50 balls. Jurel played a calm and smart supporting role, scoring 42 in 30 balls before Axar Patel’s left-arm spinner ended his innings.
Ryan Parag and Ravindra Jadeja put on a quick half-century partnership, before Mitchell Starc dismissed them both again in the 17th over. Impact player substitute Donovan Ferreira came on late in the night and played one of the most explosive cameos of the season – scoring an unbeaten 47 off just 14 balls to take RR to a mammoth 225 for 6.
Ferreira hit 6 sixes in a 14-ball attack. Some of those shots came from near-perfect yorkers that most other batsmen could have easily blocked. He went deep into the crease, got under the ball beautifully, and hit the ball with raw force right from the sweet spot of the bat.

Delhi Capitals wanted something special to chase this. They were all out for just 75 runs in their previous match. Everyone was watching. Can they really chase 226 runs?
The answer was a resounding yes.
Openers KL Rahul and Pathum Nissanka gave DC a great start. They crossed the 50-run mark in just 4.1 overs. Nissanka then completed his maiden IPL fifty in just 23 balls. DC closed the powerplay on a brilliant 70 runs without losing a single wicket.
The opening partnership between Rahul and Nissanka was 110 runs and that was the turning point of the entire match. That put Delhi clearly ahead in the game, and the batsmen who followed maintained that strong start.
Ravindra Jadeja broke the partnership by trapping Nissanka against the wicket. Nissanka scored 62 runs in 33 balls.
Nitish Rana came in at number three and got out beautifully. He made sure that Nissanka’s wicket did not let RR back into the match. He kept the team’s score under control by hitting Jadeja for two sixes in an over and scoring 33 runs in just 16 balls.
KL Rahul finally fell victim to Jofra Archer in the 16th over, who scored 75 runs in 40 balls, which included 6 fours and 5 sixes. At that point, DC needed only 49 runs in the last 28 balls – a very comfortable position.
Tristan Stubbs and Ashutosh Sharma came together for the final push. Ashutosh used the crease cleverly, hit four fours and guided DC to victory with composure and confidence. DC scored 226 runs for 3 wickets in just 19.1 overs.

Moment 2 — Parag’s struggle: After RRA lost both openers for just 12 runs, Ryan Parag came in and played one of his best IPL innings – 90 off 50 balls – to give his team something real to defend.
Moment 3 — Opening stand: Rahul and Nissanka combined to make the chase look easy. Their opening stand of 110 completely took the pressure off DC’s middle order and turned what looked like a difficult chase into a confident march.
Moment 4 — Ferreira’s blast: Ferreira comes to the crease at the end of RR’s innings and scores 47 off just 14 balls. Without that cameo, RR could have probably finished around 200, which would have been a very different game.
Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals captain): Axar says he is very happy with the team’s performance in all three departments. He particularly praises Mitchell Starc, calling him a legend for performing so well in his first match after being out for three months. He also reveals that his hand hurt after taking the catch but the physio team quickly helped him with an ice pack.
KL Rahul (Player of the Match): Rahul says that wins make big innings sweeter. He talks about reminding himself and Nissanka to play the right cricket shots and be as aggressive as possible in the powerplay. He adds that he has worked hard on his strike rate over the years and is happy to see it showing in the results now.
Riyan Parag (Rajasthan Royals captain): Parag says he feels 200 runs was appropriate on this surface and admits that he could have bowled better in the middle overs. He also reveals a hamstring concern and hopes it’s not too serious after a week of rest.
With this win, Delhi Capitals have moved up to sixth place with 8 points from 9 matches. Their next match is against Chennai Super Kings at home on May 5. Rajasthan Royals, despite the loss, are fourth with 12 points from 10 matches. They will face Gujarat Titans on May 9.

Rajasthan Royals showed great heart even after losing two wickets in the first two overs, but the bowling couldn’t support the batting effort. On the other hand, Delhi Capitals came out with a clear plan and stuck to it perfectly. KL Rahul led from the front, Nissanka provided great support at the top, and the lower middle order kept calm when needed. This win keeps DC’s season very much alive.
