The cricket world is in mourning after the death of former Afghanistan fast bowler Shapoor Zadran. Zadran was a founding member of Afghanistan Cricket. He died due to illness on July 7, 2026, at the age of 38. He played a key role in the country’s rapid development at the international level.

Afghanistan Cricket Loses One of Its Founding Stars

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) confirmed the heartbreaking news through an official statement. They paid tribute to Zadran as one of the “foundation men” of Afghanistan cricket. According to reports, the left-arm fast bowler was battling Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). It is a rare and fatal immune system disorder, and he passed away while undergoing treatment in the Delhi-NCR region.

His death came a day before his 39th birthday, leaving the global cricketing world in deep shock.

An Influential Career in Afghan Cricket

Shapoor Zadran’s career was one of the most formative periods for Afghanistan in international cricket. After making his ODI debut in 2009, he played 44 ODIs and 36 T20Is, taking 43 wickets in ODIs and 37 wickets in T20Is.

His aggression as a left-arm fast bowler and his ability to take important wickets made him one of the most consistent bowlers during the early period of his international career.

Hero of Afghanistan’s First World Cup Victory

Perhaps Zadran’s most iconic moment came during the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, when he scored the winning run against Scotland to secure Afghanistan’s first World Cup victory. This historic victory is one of the greatest milestones in Afghan cricket history. Beyond the statistics, he inspired an entire generation of Afghan cricketers.

Homage Paid

As the news spread, tributes poured in on social media from his teammates, various cricket boards, former cricketers and fans around the world.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board described him as a cricketer who contributed to his nation’s success through his commitment and dedication to international cricket.
