Shubman Gill Backs Virat Kohli for 2027 World Cup, Ends All Doubts

India head to Edgbaston after a tough white-ball tour in which they suffered a 4-0 T20I series defeat against England and a 2-0 ODI series defeat against Ireland. The ODI series starting on July 14 offers Shubman Gill’s side a chance to bounce back.

Things look better with the return of senior players. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who now play only ODI cricket for India, have returned to the team. Ever since both retired from Test cricket last year, there has been constant talk about how long they will play in this format.

However, Gill put those discussions to rest by speaking to the media on the eve of the opening ODI. The Indian captain not only made it clear that Kohli will be part of the team’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup, but also revealed that the two had spoken about their preparations for the tournament.

Gill Ends Speculation Over Kohli’s Future

Speaking on Monday, Gill was asked about Kohli’s role in the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be held in South Africa, Namibia and Zimbabwe. His answer left little room for doubt.

“There is no doubt about Virat Kohli’s place in our plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup,” Gill said.

“He will definitely play a very important role for us in that tournament. Having a senior player like him in the team is a big advantage.”

Shubman Gill also shared that the planning for the tournament is already well underway. He revealed that he spoke to Kohli just two days ago about the team’s plans and possible combinations.

“In fact, just yesterday, I was discussing our plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup with him,” Gill said. “We talked about team combinations, which players could be part of the team, which players could be important to us even if they are not currently part of the team, and where each player would best fit into the team setup.”

Senior Stars Remain Central to India’s Plans

Gill also made it clear that both former captains are central figures in India’s ODI set-up, and made it clear that they are key players rather than experienced names towards the end.

“Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been the backbone of the Indian batting line-up for the last decade, and both are an integral part of the team,” Gill said.

“The experience and skill that they bring to the team is clearly very valuable. We have seen what they have done in different situations in the last decade.”

After scoring over 600 runs in IPL 2026, after scoring heavily against New Zealand and South Africa, Kohli entered the England series as Royal Challengers Bangalore successfully defended their title. He missed the Afghanistan ODI series due to a hamstring injury sustained during the IPL final.

Meanwhile, Rohit’s form has been mixed. He started in the first two ODIs against Afghanistan but failed to convert them into big scores before scoring a half-century in the final game. This has led to discussions about how long the 39-year-old will play.

A Clear Message From India’s Captain

Gill’s comments say as much about the direction of the team as they do about Kohli’s future. The fact that the captain is discussing long-term team planning with his experienced predecessors suggests that there is a clear understanding in the dressing room during this period of change.
