Surrey have signed Indian batter Mahipal Lomror for the final six matches of the 2026 Rothesay County Championship, adding valuable batting depth and a part-time spin option for the closing stages of the season.
The 26-year-old joins Surrey at an important point in their campaign, with the club set to return to red-ball cricket against Nottinghamshire on Thursday. Surrey will also face Yorkshire and Glamorgan at home, alongside away trips to Essex, Sussex and Somerset.
Lomror’s arrival is primarily linked to Surrey’s changing squad requirements. The club will be without all-rounder Will Jacks, who is recovering from an ankle injury, while Dan Lawrence has been recalled to England’s Test squad for the upcoming series against Pakistan.
Both players have provided Surrey with useful spin-bowling options, making Lomror’s ability to contribute with his left-arm spin particularly valuable. Surrey Director of Men’s Cricket Alec Stewart said the busy international, franchise and domestic schedule had influenced the decision to bring Lomror into the squad. The signing also gives Surrey another experienced batter for the final stretch of the Championship season.
Lomror arrives with an impressive red-ball record. He has played 63 first-class matches, scoring 3,836 runs at an average of 42.62, with 10 centuries and 17 fifties. His highest score is a 300 for Rajasthan. It was against Uttarakhand in November 2024. He has also taken 62 first-class wickets with his left-arm spin, giving Surrey an additional bowling option alongside his batting.
His experience comes largely from representing Rajasthan in the Ranji Trophy. Lomror also captains his state and shares the dressing room with Surrey’s Indian leg-spinner Rahul Chahar in domestic cricket.
For Lomror, the move represents his first opportunity to play County Championship cricket and experience English red-ball conditions. The left-hander said joining Surrey for the remainder of the season was a major opportunity to challenge himself in a new environment and learn from an experienced group. His ability to occupy the middle order and contribute with spin could make him a useful addition during the demanding final phase of the Championship.
Surrey finished second in the 2025 County Championship, narrowly missing out on the title to Nottinghamshire. The club entered the 2026 campaign determined to challenge again, with Australian all-rounder Sean Abbott and India spinner Rahul Chahar among their overseas additions.
Six matches are remaining. Lomror’s arrival provides Surrey with another option as they look to finish the season strongly. His first opportunity could come immediately against Nottinghamshire, making his Surrey debut potentially one of the most intriguing storylines of the Championship run-in. For Lomror, meanwhile, the next six matches offer a chance to showcase his first-class credentials in English conditions and potentially open the door to further opportunities overseas.
