Bangladesh have produced some memorable wins in international cricket, but their latest triumph over Australia has taken that belief to another level. In the first Test at Darwin, the Tigers defeated Australia by nine wickets to secure their first-ever Test victory on Australian soil.

What made the result even more remarkable was the manner of the victory. Bangladesh did not simply hang on for a famous result; they dominated Australia with bat, ball and in the field.

Bangladesh Showed No Fear Against Australia

Australia entered the Test as the world’s top-ranked Test side, while Bangladesh were ranked ninth. The gulf in reputation and experience made Australia the overwhelming favourite. However, Bangladesh refused to play like an underdog.

Australia were bowled out for just 198 in their first innings. After that, Bangladesh responded with a 426. Tanzid Hasan provided the foundation with a brilliant 101. While, Mehidy Hasan Miraz contributed 65 to help the visitors establish a huge 228-run first-innings lead. That innings immediately changed the mood of the contest. Instead of trying merely to compete with Australia, Bangladesh began dictating the game.

Hasan Mahmud Leads the Bowling Attack

Bangladesh’s pace attack was equally impressive. Hasan Mahmud produced one of the finest performances of his career, taking six wickets in Australia’s first innings. He continued to trouble the Australian batters in the second innings. He finished the match with nine wickets, earning the Player of the Match award.

The pressure created by Bangladesh’s bowlers stopped Australia from creating the partnerships they needed. Even when Cameron Green fought back with a superb 104, Bangladesh kept their composure. Green’s century was Australia’s first individual hundred of the match, but it could not rescue the hosts. Australia were eventually dismissed for 284, leaving Bangladesh with only 57 runs to win.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz Delivers the Final Blow

Mehidy Hasan Miraz then took centre stage. After scoring 65 with the bat, Miraz produced a crucial spell in Australia’s second innings. He claimed four of the final six Australian wickets and finished with five wickets in the innings. His dismissal of key Australian batters ensured that Bangladesh did not allow the hosts to turn their second innings into a serious comeback.

With just 57 required, Bangladesh lost Tanzid Hasan early. But Shadman Islam and Mominul Haque calmly completed the chase in only 14.2 overs, with Mominul hitting the winning boundary.

A Historic Moment for Bangladesh Cricket

This win means much more than two points or a 1-0 series lead. Bangladesh had waited 23 years to return to Australia for another Test series after their previous visit. Their first Test series in Australia came in 2003, when Australia won 2-0. The Darwin victory finally gave Bangladesh their first Test win on Australian soil.

It also continued a remarkable transformation in Bangladesh’s Test cricket. The team had suffered a heavy defeat to Zimbabwe earlier in the year and were bowled out for only 54 against a Cricket Australia XI in their practice match before this Test. Yet they responded by producing one of the biggest wins in their history.

Why This Win Matters

The biggest takeaway is Bangladesh’s mentality. They did not allow Australia’s reputation to dictate the contest. Their fast bowlers attacked aggressively, their batters built a substantial first-innings lead, and their spinners maintained control when Australia attempted to fight back. Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto described the victory as the team’s biggest win across all formats.

The result also has implications for the World Test Championship. Bangladesh’s points percentage has risen to 66.67%. While, Australia’s defeat has reduced their percentage to 77.77%, making the WTC race even more competitive.

The Beginning of a New Bangladesh?

Bangladesh have beaten Australia before, most famously in the 2017 Dhaka Test and in limited-overs cricket. But defeating Australia in Australia represents a completely different achievement. This was not a lucky escape. Bangladesh dominated virtually every phase of the four-day Test.

The Tigers walked into Darwin without fear and walked away with history. If they can carry the same confidence into the remainder of the series, Bangladesh may have more than just a famous victory to celebrate—they could be witnessing the arrival of a new era in their Test cricket.

For Cricbites readers, this is a result worth remembering: Bangladesh did not simply beat Australia. They showed the cricketing world that they belonged on the biggest stage.
