There is a debate about the two generations that defined Indian cricket. MS Dhoni built a legacy on calm leadership and ICC silverware. Virat Kohli built his base on relentless run-scoring in every format.

One is a finisher who never panics. The other is an accumulator who became the most consistent all-format player of his time. Looking at both batting records and captaincy achievements, it gives a clear picture of who had a greater overall impact.

Test Cricket

Not so close. Kohli has played 123 Tests and scored 9230 runs at an average of 46.9, with 30 centuries, 31 half-centuries and a highest score of 254. Dhoni has played 90 Tests and scored 4876 runs at an average of 38.1, with 6 centuries, 33 half-centuries and a highest score of 224.

Kohli has almost doubled Dhoni’s runs and has scored five centuries. With 40 wins from 68 matches, India’s most successful Test captain remained at the No. 1 Test ranking for 42 months, the longest for any Indian team, and his captaincy success was coupled with his batting dominance. Kohli has enjoyed widespread success in Test cricket.

MS Dhoni 2005–2014 90 144 16 4876 224 38.1 8249 59.1 6 33 544 78

ODI Cricket

Kohli takes the lead again, although Dhoni’s role as a finisher changes the context. Kohli has scored 14,797 ODI runs at an average of 58.7, including 54 centuries, and has a strike rate of 93.8. Dhoni has scored 10,773 runs at an average of 50.6, including 10 centuries, and has a strike rate of 87.6, but he has achieved this record almost entirely by batting in the finishing position, not at the top of the order.

As captain, Dhoni led India to victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy and finished with 110 ODI wins, the most by an Indian captain. Kohli’s dominance in ODI cricket is statistically overwhelming, with a world record of 54 ODI centuries. Kohli wins on the basis of statistics alone. Dhoni comfortably wins the ODI captaincy due to his consistent success in ICC trophies and major tournaments.

T20 International Cricket

Kohli is the batting leader here too. He has scored 4188 T20I runs at an average of 48.7, including 1 century, 38 half-centuries and a strike rate of 137.0. Dhoni has scored 1617 runs at an average of 37.6, including no centuries, 2 half-centuries and a strike rate of 126.1, mainly in a finishing role in the middle and lower order.

Dhoni has won 41 of the 72 T20Is as captain, while Kohli has been equally lethal, winning 30 of the 50 matches he has led the team. Dhoni is proud of winning the first T20I World Cup as captain in 2007. As a batsman, Kohli’s figures are clearly superior. As a trophy-winning leader in the format, Dhoni wins.

IPL Cricket

Kohli has the highest total. He has scored 9336 IPL runs in 283 matches for Royal Challengers Bangalore at an average of 40.4, with 9 centuries, 68 half-centuries and a strike rate of 134.8. Dhoni has scored 5439 runs in 278 matches for Chennai Super Kings at an average of 38.3, with no centuries, 24 half-centuries and a strike rate of 137.4, almost entirely as a finisher.

The trophy gap has narrowed but not closed. MS Dhoni has won five IPL titles under the leadership of Chennai Super Kings, the joint most by any captain. After 18 trophyless years, Kohli has been a part of RCB’s consecutive title wins as a batsman in 2025 and 2026, although those titles were not won by Kohli as a captain but as a senior batsman under captain Rajat Patidar. Kohli was the Player of the Match in the 2026 final with an unbeaten 75. As a batsman, Kohli is ahead. As a trophy-winning captain, Dhoni is still far ahead.

Who Is the Better Captain and Batter?

As a batsman, the decision belongs to Kohli. He is ahead in almost every meaningful measure in every format, including the world record for ODI centuries and the most runs and centuries in Test cricket in both. As a captain, the picture is the other way around. Dhoni has led Team India to three ICC tournament titles, two World Cups and the Champions Trophy, while Kohli has failed to win an ICC trophy during his captaincy tenure.

Dhoni’s tactical genius and composure have won India three ICC trophies, cementing his status as a great captain, while Kohli has transformed India into a dominant overseas Test team and has enjoyed the longest spell at the top of the Test rankings for any Indian team.

It’s a split decision. Kohli is the best batsman in every format and statistically India’s most successful Test captain. Dhoni is the best white-ball leader, a calm finisher under pressure, and the only Indian captain to have won every major ICC trophy on offer. Indian cricket doesn’t have to choose one over the other. It was just lucky enough to have both.
