Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarawa formed a pace attack that took eight wickets in a single T20I against Bangladesh, and the pair bowled 29 dot balls in that match. Ryan Burle’s leg-spin is Zimbabwe’s most dangerous slow-bowling option and it gives Raza an attacking option with the ball to match his own off-spin.

Zimbabwe have a 12-35 win-loss record in T20Is at this ground but the home conditions and the confidence they have gained from the World Cup make this a different proposition to previous tours to India. Zimbabwe failed to chase the Super Eights in their last match against India, but the margin was close enough that Raza’s team will go into this series without any sense of inferiority complex.

India

Shreyas Iyer leads a team based on IPL form rather than senior internationals, with Tilak Verma as vice-captain. Vaibhav Suryavanshi is on tour after an explosive T20I debut against England, where the 15-year-old hit two sixes before being stumped.

Abhishek Sharma is India’s top-ranked T20I batsman with 858 rating points and his presence at the top of the order gives India the best chance of putting up a competitive score on a rapidly slowing surface.

Injury News

India have arrived in Zimbabwe due to injuries and have made two major changes to the bowling line-up. Harshit Rana suffered a Grade 1 hamstring injury during the third T20I against England at Trent Bridge and has been ruled out of the Zimbabwe series completely. He will report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for assessment.

Varun Chakravarthy suffered a Grade 2 hamstring injury in the same match and an MRI confirmed that he needs additional time to recover, due to which he has also been ruled out of the Zimbabwe T20I.

Ravi Bishnoi, who was not in the original squad, has been brought in in Chakravarthy’s injured position. Prince Yadav has remained in England for the ODI series in Rana’s original place.

Bishnoi gave away 60 runs in four overs in the second T20I against England, which raised questions, but his experience in these conditions and his IPL form give India a realistic spin option alongside Harsh Dubey.

Zimbabwe have no new injury concerns in the first match.

The average first innings score in T20Is at the Harare Sports Club is 151 to 157, making it one of the lowest-scoring T20I venues in world cricket. The surface is bouncy at the start but slows down considerably as the innings progresses, making it difficult for batsmen to time their shots cleanly.

Spinners will be effective from the middle overs and teams with quality slow bowlers who can bowl consistently will dominate. The outfield is on the slow side, meaning boundaries need to be hit cleanly to reach the ropes.

The pitch slows down as each innings progresses and favours the spinners, and teams batting first have a better record of winning here. The team winning the toss is likely to bat first.

Scoring more than 165 on this surface really puts pressure on the chasing team, especially against a Zimbabwe team that relies on spinners to take wickets in the second half of a T20 chase.
