Keemo Paul showcased his all-round ability with a match-winning performance as Jamaica Kingsmen beat St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots by 51 runs at Sabina Park in the Caribbean Premier League on August 18.
After the Kingsmen lost early wickets, Paul hit 65 from 36 balls and joined captain Rovman Powell for a vital 99-run partnership that helped the hosts reach 181/6.
Paul then produced his best bowling performance of the season, taking 3/30 as the Patriots were bowled out for 130 with 12 balls remaining. The win was Jamaica’s second straight victory and moved them up to second in the standings.
The Kingsmen were asked to bat first and suffered an early setback when Saurabh Netravalkar opened with a double-wicket maiden. Kirk Mckenzie chopped one onto his stumps before Keacy Carty edged a delivery to the wicketkeeper. Wanindu Hasaranga then trapped Usman Khan LBW in the sixth over, leaving the Kingsmen at 42 for 3 at the end of the Powerplay.
Powell came in and hit two fours and a six, but Jamaica lost another wicket when Hasaranga returned to remove Reeza Hendricks in the eighth over. With the score at 54 for 4, Paul walked in and changed the course of the innings with a superb attack. He found the boundary from his first delivery and took 25 runs from the 11 balls he faced from Hasaranga.
Paul then took 22 runs off Netravalkar in the 17th over and reached his half-century in the process. Jason Holder eventually dismissed him for 65 from 36 balls in the 18th over, with his innings containing five fours and five sixes. Powell fell for 49 in the next over after hitting Obed McCoy for a six, but the Kingsmen had already built a strong position and finished with a competitive score.
The Patriots also struggled during the early part of their chase. Andre Fletcher fell in the opening over, while Johnson Charles was unable to make the most of two dropped chances and was dismissed in the fourth over. Paul then bowled Kyle Mayers in the fifth over, leaving the Patriots at 45 for 3 after the Powerplay.
Nikhil Chaudhary showed some promise before Vitel Lawes trapped him LBW in the eighth over. The next over brought another setback when Dasun Shanaka was run out after a collision with Kevin Wickham. With half the side gone for only 64, Wickham and Navin Bidaisee stopped the slide and began putting the innings back together.
Their 44-run partnership ended when Bidaisee retired out at the start of the 14th over. That decision did not work out, as the Patriots then lost their final five wickets for just 22 runs. Paul returned for the 18th over and took the last two wickets to finish with 3/30 and complete a match-winning all-round performance.
St. Kitts & Nevis Patriots were bowled out for 130 in 18 overs, giving Jamaica Kingsmen a convincing 51-run victory. The result took the Kingsmen to second in the table, while the Patriots slipped to seventh in the seven-team competition.
