Charlie Dean will captain the England women’s team in the absence of their captain, Nat Sciver-Brunt, for the upcoming three-match ODI series against Ireland, starting on September 1. Dean previously led England in the ODI series against New Zealand when Sciver-Brunt was out with an injury. She will now take charge again for the Ireland series.
England have left out several senior players for the tour. Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge are working on their fitness, while Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Bell and Amy Jones have not been selected. Their absence gives several players a chance to prove themselves in the ODI side.
Alice Capsey, who was England’s reserve wicketkeeper at the recent T20 World Cup, will take over behind the stumps in Jones’ absence. Grace Potts and Kira Chathli are the only uncapped players in the squad. Both have been part of the England setup during the summer. Charis Pavely, who has played two T20Is, could make her ODI debut.
Ryana MacDonald-Gay has also returned to the squad after recovering from a lower-back injury that kept her out last year. The Surrey player has had a strong season for her county and Manchester Super Giants. Tilly Corteen-Coleman is also part of the squad and will look to add to her 2 ODI caps, both of which came against New Zealand.
Head coach Charlotte Edwards said the Ireland series gives England a chance to focus on 50-over cricket after spending much of the year playing T20 cricket.
“The focus has rightly been on T20 cricket for much of this year, but with a memorable run to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final now behind us, this is a chance for players to display their 50-over skills and bank some valuable experience for the future,” Edwards said.
She added that the series could help younger players move closer to regular international cricket.
“We have got plenty of exciting and talented cricketers in our game and this is an opportunity for some of them to push themselves further forward by hopefully contributing to England victories and putting pressure on future selection,” she said.
With a heavily rotated squad and a strategic shift back to the 50-over format, England’s upcoming series against Ireland serves as a vital proving ground for their next generation of talent.
The opening ODI will be played in Leicester on September 1. The second match will take place in Derby on September 3, while the third and final ODI will be played in Worcester on September 6.
