India opened their two-Test series against Sri Lanka in emphatic fashion. They secured a 165-run victory in Galle to take a 1-0 lead. The result was made even more memorable as it came in India’s 600th Test match, with young left-arm spinner Manav Suthar producing a match-winning ten-wicket haul.
Playing only his second Test, Suthar proved decisive when India needed wickets most. After taking 4/76 in Sri Lanka’s first innings, the 24-year-old returned with 6/55 in the second innings, finishing with match figures of 10/131. His final spell effectively ended Sri Lanka’s hopes of chasing 372. The hosts were 199/6 before Suthar struck three times in a single over, including the crucial dismissal of Sonal Dinusha, who had been keeping Sri Lanka’s hopes alive. Sri Lanka eventually collapsed to 206 all out in 77.4 overs.
The performance also put Suthar into an exclusive group. He became only the third Indian bowler to claim a ten-wicket haul in a Test in Sri Lanka, after Harbhajan Singh and Ravichandran Ashwin. His 10/131 is also the best match bowling performance by an Indian in Sri Lanka, surpassing Harbhajan’s 10/153 and Ashwin’s 10/160 at Galle.
While Suthar finished the job with the ball, Devdutt Padikkal laid the foundation for India’s victory with a magnificent 167 in the first innings. His maiden Test century helped India post a formidable 462, alongside important contributions from KL Rahul, who made 82, and Dhruv Jurel, who added 51. Sri Lanka were subsequently dismissed for 284. This gave India a substantial first-innings advantage.
India were less dominant with the bat in their second innings, being bowled out for 193. However, their first-innings cushion meant Sri Lanka were left with a daunting target of 372.
Suthar’s recent performance is another big step. On debut against Afghanistan in June, he claimed 6/33 in the first innings and finished with seven wickets in the match as India recorded their biggest Test victory by runs. His ability to maintain control while extracting turn and bounce from Galle’s surface made him India’s biggest threat throughout the Test. Captain Shubman Gill has already backed the young spinner’s long-term prospects, praising his performance after the victory.
The 165-run win gives India a valuable advantage heading into the second Test in Colombo from August 23. The victory also provides 12 crucial World Test Championship points as India look to strengthen their position in the ongoing cycle. For Sri Lanka, the challenge is now to respond quickly. For India, however, Galle offered plenty of encouragement — and none more significant than the emergence of Suthar as a potential long-term red-ball match-winner.
With one Test remaining, India will now look to complete a series victory, while Sri Lanka must find a way to counter a spinner who has already made a remarkable impact in only his second Test.
