The Pakistan Super League was never built for caution. Since its inception in 2016, the tournament has rewarded batsmen who are ready to strike from the first ball, often turning matches around in just a few overs. In eleven seasons, hundreds have been scored, records have been broken and bowling attacks have been shattered, but few achievements have captured the ferocity of T20 batting like hitting a fifty in less than twenty balls.

As of PSL 2026, only a select group of players have reached the milestone of the fastest fifty, producing innings that change games before captains can adjust their fielding. Four players currently hold the all-time record, each having hit a fifty in just 17 balls.

1. Kamran Akmal – 17 Balls vs Karachi Kings (2018)

It was an interesting evening in Lahore on March 21, 2018. Opening for Peshawar Zalmi against Karachi Kings, the experienced wicketkeeper hit a fifty off just 17 balls, setting a PSL record that still stands. By the time he was dismissed for 77 off 27 balls, he had hit five fours and eight sixes at a strike rate of over 317. The innings transformed the play-off competition into a batting display and set a benchmark that future generations will struggle to beat.

2. Asif Ali – 17 Balls vs Lahore Qalandars (2019)

Almost a year later, on 9 March 2019 in Karachi, Asif joined Ali Akmal at the top of the record books. Representing Islamabad United against Lahore Qalandars, he launched a devastating attack in which he scored a fifty off just 17 balls. His unbeaten 55 runs included three fours and six sixes, leaving the bowlers with no chance to recover. The record was no longer unique.

3. Hazratullah Zazai – 17 Balls vs Karachi Kings (2021)

The PSL was shifted to Abu Dhabi during the 2021 pandemic-hit season, but the scoring momentum remained intact. On 15 June 2021, Afghan opener Hazratullah Zazai hit a 17-ball fifty for Peshawar Zalmi against Karachi Kings. His 63-run knock included eight fours and four sixes and showed why he is considered one of the most explosive powerplay hitters in world cricket. Three players now share the record for the fastest fifty.

4. Rilee Rossouw – 17 Balls vs Peshawar Zalmi (2023)

The record became the fourth owner in Rawalpindi on 10 March 2023. South African left-arm bowler Riley Rossouw scored a century during a remarkable innings for Multan Sultans against Peshawar Zalmi. His fifty came off 17 balls and he scored 121 runs. Twelve fours and eight sixes highlighted one of the most devastating innings ever seen in the competition.

5. Paul Stirling – 18 Balls vs Peshawar Zalmi (2022)

On 30 January 2022, Irish opener Paul Stirling announced his arrival in PSL style. Playing for Islamabad United in Karachi, he hit an 18-ball fifty against Peshawar Zalmi and ended his innings with 57 runs. His strike rate, which included seven fours and three sixes, reached close to 289, narrowly missing the all-time record.

6. Tim David – 18 Balls vs Peshawar Zalmi (2022)

Six days later, another batsman achieved the feat. Singapore-born power hitter Tim David scored a half-century off 18 balls for Multan Sultans against Peshawar Zalmi on 05 February 2022. His unbeaten 51 runs included six tremendous sixes and cemented his reputation as one of the world’s most fearsome finishers.

7. Mohammad Haris – 18 Balls vs Islamabad United (2022)

On 17 February 2022 in Lahore, young Pakistani wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Haris hit an 18-ball fifty for Peshawar Zalmi against Islamabad United. His 70-run innings included seven fours and five sixes, confirming him as one of the league’s rising attacking stars.

8. Luke Ronchi – 19 Balls vs Karachi Kings (2018)

Before Akmal’s record-breaking innings, this benchmark was held by former New Zealand international Luke Ronchi. Representing Islamabad United in Dubai on 18 March 2018, Ronchi hit a fifty off 19 balls against Karachi Kings, scoring 94 runs. His innings included twelve fours and five sixes and briefly held the record for the fastest fifty in PSL history.

9. Sam Billings – 19 Balls vs Quetta Gladiators (2025)

English wicketkeeper-batsman Sam Billings entered the elite list during PSL 2025. Playing for Lahore Qalandars against Quetta Gladiators in Rawalpindi on 13 April, he completed fifty runs in just 19 balls. The innings displayed the increasing aggression that has become the hallmark of modern PSL batting.

10. Maaz Sadaqat – 19 Balls vs Multan Sultans (2026)

This new player came during PSL 2026. Karachi Kings’ young batsman Maz Sadqat scored a 19-ball half-century against Multan Sultans on 1 April 2026, becoming the latest player to make it into the competition’s all-time top ten. His achievement shows how quickly batting standards are evolving in the league.

Conclusion

Eight years after Kamran Akmal shattered expectations in Lahore, the record for the fastest fifty in PSL stands at 17 balls. Akmal, Asif Ali, Hazratullah Zazai and Rally Rossouw are at the top, while a generation of power hitters have pushed the boundaries of what was considered possible in franchise cricket.

From Rawalpindi to Abu Dhabi, Karachi to Lahore, these innings lasted only minutes, yet each left a lasting mark on PSL history. As the scoring rate increases and the batting becomes increasingly aggressive, the question is not whether the 17-ball mark will fall, but who will be brave enough to finally break it.
