The drama intensified after Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore by 55 runs at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium on May 23. The ground, which has seen over 4,500 runs this season, once again presented a batting spectacle, with SRH scoring 255 for 4, one of their highest scores of IPL 2026. The result did not affect RCB’s qualification hopes, but it did officially reduce the race for the final playoff spot in IPL 2026 to four teams.

Royal Challengers Bangalore with 18 points, Gujarat Titans with 18 points and Sunrisers Hyderabad with 18 points, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals are now fighting for the one remaining playoff spot. For more cricket updates and insights, visit CricBites.

SRH Fall Short Of Top-Two Finish

Sunrisers Hyderabad were playing their last league match, knowing that an easy win would not be enough. Pat Cummins‘ team needed a big win over RCB to secure a top-two finish and a spot in Qualifier 1.

The batting unit certainly did its job. Hyderabad scored 255 for 4 in 20 overs, continuing a season in which they have crossed the 250-run mark several times. Their attacking approach has made them one of the most fearsome batting units in the competition, averaging over 10 runs per over throughout the season.

However, IPL qualification is often decided by math as much as by cricket.

To edge out both Gujarat Titans and RCB on net run rate, Sunrisers needed a margin of victory of at least 90 runs. Their eventual 55-run victory was impressive but not big enough to achieve the target. Sometimes scoring 255 runs is enough to dominate a match. Sometimes it is not enough to change the points table.

As a result, Hyderabad finished third and will now play the Eliminator in Mullanpur on May 27. Meanwhile, despite the loss, defending champions RCB will retain the top spot and will face Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1 in Dharamsala on May 26.

Rajasthan Royals Hold The Advantage

Of the four teams fighting for a final playoff spot, Rajasthan Royals are in the strongest position. Currently on 14 points with a net run rate of +0.083 after 13 matches, Rajasthan have the easiest qualification equation among all the contenders. They will qualify by defeating Mumbai Indians.

A win will take their tally to 16 points, a total that neither Punjab Kings nor Kolkata Knight Riders can match. This means Rajasthan don’t have to rely on other teams’ biases or complicated net run rate calculations.

Punjab Kings Need Results Elsewhere

Punjab Kings have experienced one of the strangest campaigns of IPL 2026. Led by Shreyas Iyer, they started brilliantly, collecting 13 points from their first eight matches and looked like real title contenders. Then came a collapse that no one had seen coming.

Six consecutive defeats turned a promising season into a desperate fight for survival. Suddenly a team that once looked destined for the top two found itself praying for other results.

Punjab now enter their final league match against Lucknow Super Giants needing both a victory and help from elsewhere.

A win would take PBKS to 15 points, but qualification would still depend heavily on Rajasthan losing to Mumbai Indians. The encouraging factor for Punjab is their superior net run rate, which is comfortably ahead of both Rajasthan and Kolkata and could be decisive if the teams finish level on points.

KKR And DC Face A Knockout Battle

Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals meet in a knockout match. For KKR, the equation is straightforward. Beat Delhi and stay alive. Lose and their season is over instantly.

Their recent win against Mumbai Indians took their net run rate to +0.011 and kept their playoff hopes alive. Even with another win, Kolkata still needs to beat Rajasthan Royals. They would also prefer Punjab Kings to slip up against Lucknow, which would reduce the chances of a complicated multi-team net run rate battle.

Delhi Capitals are mathematically alive but face the toughest road of all. Their net run rate of -0.871 is the worst among the contenders and leaves almost no room for error.

Delhi will have to beat Kolkata first. Then they need to beat both Rajasthan and Punjab. However, qualification could depend on significant improvements in winning margin and net run rate.

Conclusion

The race for the final playoff spot in IPL 2026 has become a contest between confidence, pressure and math.

Rajasthan Royals remain favourites as qualification is completely in their hands. Punjab Kings need a win and outside help. Kolkata Knight Riders need a win as well as favourable results elsewhere. Delhi Capitals need almost everything. For more cricket updates and insights, visit CricBites.
