On May 22, 2026, Vijay Shankar shared a heartfelt retirement note on his official social media accounts, bringing an emotional end to his Indian domestic and IPL career. At the age of 35, he decided to end a journey that he had started as a young boy when he dreamed of one day wearing the India jersey.
Vijay Shankar’s cricketing story began in the domestic cricket of Tamil Nadu where competition is always fierce and it is never easy for any young player to survive. He started his career in 2012 and gradually made a name for himself through consistent performances in various formats for over thirteen seasons. His domestic record includes 77 first-class matches in which he has scored over 4,000 runs and taken over 40 wickets which shows his worth as a true all-rounder.
Along with first-class cricket, he has also played over 100 List A matches and over 150 T20 games which proves his long-standing presence in the Indian system. His performances eventually led to his call-up to India where he represented the country in 12 ODIs and 9 T20Is between 2018 and 2019 which was the peak of his international career.
One of his most memorable moments came during the 2019 ODI World Cup when he took a wicket against Pakistan on the very first ball of the tournament, when he replaced an injured bowler during an over. Although his international career was short, the moment remained etched in people’s memories.
Vijay Shankar has played several seasons in the IPL for Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals and Gujarat Titans. He was never the biggest star of any team, but he was always considered a useful player who could contribute with his all-rounder skills when needed.
He has scored over 1200 runs in IPL cricket and his best season came in 2023 when he crossed 300 runs at a strike rate of over 160 which shows his ability to meet the demands of modern T20. He was also a part of the Gujarat Titans team that won the IPL title in 2022 which is one of the biggest highlights of his franchise career.
Even though he was frequently moved between teams, he always found a role in the teams which shows how franchises value his experience and utility as an all-rounder option.
Vijay Shankar’s career was also heavily criticised, especially during the 2019 World Cup selection debate when he was called a 3D player by many fans and pundits. This label became a topic on social media and followed him throughout that period of his career.
In his retirement message, he openly spoke about facing negativity and how he chose to ignore it and move on rather than react to it. He explained that every player goes through phases where public opinion becomes harsh but mental strength is what keeps a career alive in professional sports.
He did not deny the criticism but he did not let it define his entire journey which showcased a calm mindset based on years of experience in competitive cricket.

In his official retirement statement shared on social media, Vijay Shankar wrote:
“Cricket is my life. I started playing at the age of 10 and after 25 years, I am grateful and blessed to have played at every level and at the highest level. Representing our country will always be one of the proudest and happiest moments for me.”
He further added that he has decided to retire from domestic cricket and the IPL to pursue new opportunities, thanking the BCCI, his teams and everyone who supported him throughout his journey.
Vijay Shankar, in his final words, described cricket as his life and thanked him for everything the game had given him, from childhood to the professional level. He also mentioned special memories like bowling in India’s milestone ODI matches and representing the country on the biggest stage of world cricket.
He referred to himself as “your 3D cricketer Vijay Shankar”, portraying a player who had finally made peace with how the world saw him. It was not anger or sarcasm but an acceptance of the identity that had been hiding behind him for years.
