India’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign has been dealt a major blow as off-spinner Shreyanka Patil has been ruled out of the rest of the tournament due to an ankle injury. As a result, the team management has included uncapped leg-spinner Prema Rawat in her place.

Patil suffered the injury while fielding in India’s Group A match against the Netherlands on Wednesday. The 23-year-old injured her right ankle during her first spell and was eventually stretchered off the field, bringing an unfortunate end to her campaign.

Major Blow to India’s Bowling Plans

Patil’s absence is a major blow for India, especially as the off-spinner has only recently returned to international cricket after recovering from an earlier injury.

She featured in India’s win over Pakistan earlier in the tournament, bowling an economical spell of 0/17 in three overs. Her return has added balance and control to India’s bowling attack, making this latest injury particularly disappointing for the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side.

An ICC statement later confirmed that Patil had been ruled out of the remainder of the tournament due to an ankle injury sustained during the match against the Netherlands.

Prema Rawat Drafted Into World Cup Squad

Following Patil’s withdrawal, the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Event Technical Committee has approved Prema Rawat as her replacement in the Indian squad.

“The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 Event Technical Committee has approved Prema Rawat as Shreyanka Patil‘s replacement in the Indian squad,” the ICC said in an official media release.

The release further stated that Rawat was included in the squad after Patil was ruled out due to an injury sustained while fielding against the Netherlands. It also reiterated that the approval of the Event Technical Committee must be obtained before any replacement player is officially added to the World Cup squad.

Rawat was already in England with the India A team and will now join the senior team for the rest of the competition.

Opportunity Knocks for Rising Leg-Spinner

The 24-year-old leg-spinner is yet to break into international cricket, but she has already built a strong reputation through her performances in domestic and development cricket.

Rawat first caught the eye with impressive performances in the Women’s Premier League and the Women’s Asia Cup Rising Stars tournament. While representing India A in the latter competition, she took eight wickets at an excellent average of 9.62.

Patil aside, Rawat now has the chance to make her mark on the global stage as India look to win their maiden Women’s T20 World Cup title.
