The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has appointed Shubhdeep Ghosh as the new fielding coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. He will replace T Dilip, whose tenure ended after the white-ball tour of England. The change is part of a wider restructuring of India’s support staff ahead of the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.

Ghosh brings experience from domestic cricket, the National Cricket Academy (NCA), India A and the IPL. His appointment reflects the BCCI’s focus on improving India’s fielding standards after a series of inconsistent performances in recent months.

BCCI Confirms Major Coaching Change

After a review of the team’s support staff, the BCCI decided not to extend T Dilip’s contract. Dilip had been India’s fielding coach since 2021. He was credited with introducing several innovative fielding drills and the popular post-match fielding medal ceremony. However, India’s fielding came under scrutiny during the England tour. This led the board to opt for a new direction. With Dilip’s departure, assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschette also departed as part of the reshuffle.

Who is Subhadeep Ghosh?

Subhadeep Ghosh is one of India’s most respected fielding specialists. A former first-class cricketer. He has built an impressive coaching career across various levels of Indian cricket.

Some of his notable coaching roles include:

Role Team/Organization
Fielding Coach National Cricket Academy (NCA)
Fielding Coach India A
Fielding Coach India U-19 World Cup-winning team
Fielding Coach Indian team at the Asian Games
IPL Experience Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders support staff

His work with young Indian cricketers has gained lot of applause. This made him a natural choice for the senior national side.

Why Did India Replace T Dilip?

T Dilip enjoyed a successful tenure with Team India. Yet, recent fielding performances failed to meet expectations. The board chose not to renew Dilip’s contract. Instead they handed the responsibility to Ghosh.

What Does This Mean for Team India?

Ghosh’s appointment comes at an important stage as India prepares for a busy international calendar under head coach Gautam Gambhir.

His primary responsibilities will include:

  • Improving catching efficiency.
  • Enhancing ground fielding standards.
  • Developing athletic fielding drills.
  • Working closely with young players entering the national setup.
  • Preparing the squad for major ICC tournaments.

Having already worked with several current Indian internationals through the NCA and India A programs, Ghosh is expected to integrate quickly into the senior setup.

A New Era Begins

The appointment of Shubhdeep Ghosh marks the beginning of a new chapter for India’s support staff. T Dilip certainly leaves behind a memorable tenure, and one that is full of innovative coaching methods. But the BCCI believes that Ghosh’s experience in player development and fielding programmes can help India improve its standards.

With the team set to tour Sri Lanka soon, all eyes will be on how quickly Ghosh contributes and how much he helps Team India build a top-notch fielding team.
