The first IPL Super Over was played between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals at Newlands, Cape Town in 2009. Both teams scored 150 runs. KKR scored 150 runs for the loss of 8 wickets and RR reached 150 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. In the Super Over, KKR scored 15 runs for the loss of 1 wicket. RR chased 0 runs for the loss of 18 wickets and won comfortably. Rajasthan Royals won the first Super Over in the history of IPL and it was a clean victory. The format was new. The pressure was real. In 2010, Chennai Super Kings faced Kings XI Punjab at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Both teams were bowled out for 136 runs. CSK scored 136 for 7 and KXIP scored 136 for 8. In the Super Over, RCB scored 15 for 0 and DD could only score 11 for 2. Royal Challengers Bangalore won. Their strong hitting in the Super Over was the only difference. Trailing by two wickets and four runs short, Delhi could not cross the line.
In 2014, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals once again faced each other in the Super Over at the Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi. Both teams were bowled out for 152 runs. KKR scored 152 for 8 and RR scored 152 for 5. Both teams scored 11 runs each in the Super Over. The score was tied again. RR won on boundary count. They hit more boundaries in the entire match and that was enough. This is a cold way to lose a cricket match. KKR scored the same number of runs as RR in the Super Over and still went home defeated.
In 2015, the closest match of the season was played between Rajasthan Royals and Kings XI Punjab at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Both teams scored 191 runs. RRA scored 191 runs for the loss of 6 wickets and KXIP could only score 191 runs for the loss of 6 wickets. In the Super Over, KXIP’s score was 15 runs for the loss of 2 wickets and RR could only score 6 runs for the loss of 2 wickets. Kings XI Punjab won by 9 runs. KXIP’s batting completely defeated RR in the Super Over. Six runs when fifteen runs were needed tells you how badly the chase collapsed.
In 2017, Gujarat Lions faced Mumbai Indians at the Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot. GL scored 153 for 9 and MI equalized by scoring 153 for 10 in 20 overs. In the Super Over, MI scored 11 for 2. GL gave away just 6 for 0. Mumbai Indians emerged victorious. When the pressure was on, they showed composure and Gujarat could not score the required runs despite keeping their wickets intact.
In 2019, Delhi Capitals and Kolkata Knight Riders clashed at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. DC scored 185 for 6 and KKR equalled it by scoring 185 for 8. In the Super Over, DC scored 10 for 1 and KKR could only manage 7 for 1 in reply. Delhi Capitals won. Their aggressive Super Over batting proved decisive and KKR fell three runs short of a target that seemed achievable until it was not.
In 2019, Mumbai Indians faced Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. MI scored 162 for 5 and SRH scored 162 for 6. SRH scored 8 for 2 in the Super Over. MI chased it down and won by 9 runs without losing a wicket. Mumbai Indians won. They needed 9 runs and they got them without losing a wicket. Clean and efficient and if you are on the winning side, the Super Over is a must.
In 2020, Delhi Capitals played a match against Kings XI Punjab at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Both teams scored 157 runs. DC scored 157 runs for 8 wickets and KXIP’s score was 157 runs for 8 wickets. The match was very tough in the Super Over. KXIP’s score was just 2 runs for 2 wickets, losing both wickets cheaply. DC won the match without losing a single wicket by chasing 3 wickets. Delhi Capitals won the rest of the match. KXIP’s batting collapsed in the Super Over and DC barely needed anything to finish the job.

DC won by 8 wickets for 0 off the last ball. Delhi Capitals won. DC’s calculated batting made the difference by the smallest possible margin. One run again. One run and the match was theirs.
