The five-match ODI series between West Indies and New Zealand is underway at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. The 2nd ODI takes place on Monday, July 13, two days after the first match at the same ground. Guyana hosts the first three ODIs before the series moves to Kensington Oval, Barbados, for the final two fixtures on July 19 and 21.

Both teams are building their squads with the 2027 ODI World Cup squarely in mind. Every match in this series carries that weight. The 2nd ODI begins at 2:30 PM local time and 12:00 AM IST (July 14).

Key Insights

West Indies

West Indies have named Shai Hope as captain and wicketkeeper for the series, with the team largely unchanged from the one that played in the recent ODI series against Sri Lanka.

The biggest talking point is the inclusion of a player who has never played a professional game. Nineteen-year-old arm spinner Vitale Laws has earned his first senior call-up after an impressive performance in the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier this year, where he was named in the Team of the Tournament for taking 10 wickets and bowling the most dot balls in the competition.

Former West Indies spinner Nikita Miller has been added to the team management group for the Guyana leg to provide Laws with specialist coaching support during his first senior international stint.

Justin Greaves has been in strong form this series. After scoring 242 against Greaves and Sri Lanka, Shai Hope said he has shown he is capable of scoring runs in all conditions against all bowling attacks. Shimron Hetmyer is absent, as he has been granted an NOC to complete Major League Cricket commitments for the Guyana leg. Head coach Darren Sammy said every series from here to the 50-over World Cup is a must-win and the matches against New Zealand provide the best opportunity to continue improving as an ODI unit.

New Zealand

Mitchell Santner will lead New Zealand for the tour, with Tom Latham keeping wicket. Key fast bowlers Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry and Will O’Rourke are rested to take on the responsibilities, Blair Tickner is recovering from ankle surgery, Devon Conway is absent for family reasons and Rachin Ravindra has been given time off to participate in Major League Cricket.

Despite these absences, the team is not too weak. Jacob Duffy has returned to the international setup after taking time off after the birth of his first child. Fast bowler Matthew Fisher is also included and could be a contender for his ODI debut.

New Zealand recently entered the Caribbean straight after winning the Test series in England, defeating the hosts by 160 runs in the final Test at Nottingham.

This kind of red-ball pace is rare in ODI cricket but it reflects a team that is currently playing with real confidence. Michael Bracewell and Daryl Mitchell provide real lower-order firepower and the spin options around Santner give New Zealand plenty of variety on a surface that rewards finger spin and wrist spin in equal measure.

Pitch Report: Providence Cricket Stadium

The pitch at Providence Stadium in Guyana is traditionally slow and assists spinners from the start. Batting here can be challenging as the ball does not come onto the bat easily, making strokeplay difficult. Fast bowlers get very little help and must rely on variations, while spinners dominate the middle overs and control the scoring rate.

In ODIs, the average first-innings score at Providence is around 215, and chasing is not easy because the pitch slows down further, so teams bowling first often enjoy some advantage.

Any total above 230 becomes very difficult to chase here. The outfield is not the quickest, so batters need to rotate strike and build partnerships rather than rely on boundaries. Both Gudakesh Motie for West Indies and Mitchell Santner for New Zealand are exactly the type of spinners this surface is designed to help.

Toss Prediction

Teams with strong spin attacks and batters who play spin well have the upper hand at Providence, and captains often prefer to bat first and use their spinners later in the match.

Both captains know this ground well and the toss winner is likely to bat first, set a total above the 215 average and then back their spin bowling to defend it in the second innings. Batting first here has historically been the smarter decision and nothing about this match changes that calculation.

Match Prediction

West Indies are at home and their spin bowling attack is perfectly suited to these conditions. Gudakesh Moti is as difficult an option as any spinner on Guyana’s slow pitch at the moment.

New Zealand lack many first-choice pacers and the Providence surface almost completely deprives them of their main attacking mode. However, Santner’s slow left-arm bowler is perfectly suited to this pitch and is experienced enough to build New Zealand’s batting partnership as this ground demands in all conditions.

West Indies have home advantage, pitch advantage and depth in spin. If Shai Hope fires at the top and the spinners execute in the middle overs, West Indies should win this match. New Zealand will push them hard, but the conditions at Providence Stadium make it difficult to keep the home team at bay.
