The T20I series ended badly for India. England won it 4-0 and India made some unwanted records along the way, including their biggest defeat in T20I history. Now the format has completely changed.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Shubman Gill have stepped into the field for the ODI series and this Indian team has completely changed its complexion. The second ODI will be played on July 16 at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff, the match will start at 1:00 PM local time and 5:30 PM IST.

India

Shubman Gill is leading the team, with Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah both returning to the ODI set-up after missing the recent series. Kohli suffered a hamstring injury during the IPL 2026 final that forced him to miss the Afghanistan ODI series, and his participation is subject to fitness clearance.

If Kohli is fit, this Indian top order suddenly looks very different to anything England have seen during the T20I leg. With Rohit Sharma at the top, Shubman Gill at 3 and Kohli at 4, it is a batting lineup that has enough quality to score 300-plus runs on any surface. Jasprit Bumrah missed the T20I series entirely but returned for the ODIs, the bowler added that England have no comfortable answer in any format.

Kuldeep Yadav gives India another premium spin option alongside Axar Patel, and Washington adds some good batting depth in the lower order. India thrashed Afghanistan 3-0 in their recent ODI series and that form looks a far cry from the collapse at Trent Bridge. The returning senior players have completely reset this group.

England

Harry Brook leads England’s ODI team, with Jos Buttler keeping wicket, Joe Root providing experience at the top of the order and Jacob Bethell supporting from the middle order. Brook was in excellent form in the T20Is against India and his ODI record at home is equally strong.

Sam Curran was England’s most complete performer in the T20I series, taking wickets at the top of the innings and giving useful runs at the bottom. Jofra Archer and Josh Tong have been rested after heavy workloads during the Test series against New Zealand and the T20Is against India.

England’s pace attack could look a little different for the ODI series, with Shakib Mahmood and Gurnoor Brar available as options. England have won 2 of their last 3 ODI series against top-5 opposition teams at home and their batting depth in the 50-over format makes them dangerous no matter the situation.

Pitch Report: Sophia Gardens, Cardiff

The pitch at Sophia Gardens Cardiff offers both batsmen and bowlers a good chance. Fast bowlers can get swing and bounce early on and spinners can get help later in the match. The highest ODI score at Sophia Gardens Cardiff is 386/6, made by England against Bangladesh, which shows that big batting is possible here in good conditions, while the lowest ODI score is 125 all out, made by Afghanistan against South Africa.

In ODIs, Sophia Gardens usually has medium-scoring matches, with batting first often being a good option. Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist spin will become increasingly dangerous as the pitch dries up and slows down in the second half of the match. Both teams have spin options to suit the Cardiff conditions after the first 15 overs.

Toss Prediction

Sophia Gardens often helps bowlers swing early and then becomes better for batting as the match progresses. Winning the toss and batting first on a new wicket is the standard decision on this ground.

Chasing scores over 280 becomes very difficult as the surface dries up and the spinners get a turn. Both captains know Cardiff well enough to make the same decision if they win the flip. Expect the toss winner to bat first and try to build a platform in the first 15 overs while the pitch is still playing true.

Match Prediction

The first ODI at Edgbaston on July 14 sets the tone for the second ODI at Cardiff’s Sophia Gardens. India’s senior players bring a different level of quality to the format than the T20I team, which was dismantled.

Bumrah’s excellent form with the new ball in English conditions is as dangerous as any bowler visiting England. If Kohli is fit and aggressive, India’s batting will be really hard to stop anywhere on this tour.

England’s home advantage and Brook’s form cannot be ignored. But this is a different India. The ODI format suits their senior players better than the T20I leg. If their senior players start playing early in both innings, India are slight favourites to level the series at Cardiff.
