India is one of the most dominant teams in T20 international cricket. They have won two T20 World Cups, produced the highest run-scorers in T20I history and built teams that have beaten everyone on their day. But the format offers no permanent protection to anyone.

There have been afternoons and evenings when the entire batting line-up collapsed before the opposition had time to finish celebrating. This seven-match losing streak has been India’s biggest ever defeat in T20I cricket.

India vs England – 125 runs

This is India’s biggest defeat in T20I history and it happened at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on July 7, 2026. India won the toss and elected to bowl, but England scored 201/7 on a difficult surface. Phil Salt scored 70 runs off 44 balls, Sam Curran scored a half-century off 36 balls and Jos Buttler contributed early to take England past 200 runs.

India never got off to a good start in their chase. Josh Tong took 4/28 and Jofra Archer 3/29 as the Indian batting lineup was all out for 76 runs in just 11.4 overs, their second-lowest total in T20Is. Vaibhav Suryavanshi was India’s highest scorer, scoring just 13 runs. Five wickets fell inside the Powerplay and the innings was over before most fans had finished their first drink.

England took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series and handed India their worst day in the format by a wide margin. Jofra Archer was named Player of the Match. England captain Harry Brook said the planning and communication in the second half was perfect and the bowlers knew what to bowl.

India vs New Zealand – 80 runs

India went to the Westpac Stadium in Wellington on February 6, 2019 and suffered their most one-sided defeat, losing by 80 runs. New Zealand posted a score of 219/6, which is almost enough to chase a full innings on any surface.

India were all out for 139 and never came close to mounting a real challenge. The Wellington pitch offered pace and bounce that the Indian lineup could not handle and the New Zealand bowlers used every bit of it.

India vs South Africa – 76 runs

India suffered their biggest defeat in a World Cup in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup on February 22, 2026. South Africa posted a score of 187/7 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad and India were all out for 111 runs.

A 76-run defeat at home in a World Cup match is not just a defeat. It is a statement result. The South African bowlers broke down the Indian batting order to a level where India knows better than any other team in the competition.

India vs South Africa – 51 runs

South Africa had a one-sided performance at Mullanpur during South Africa’s tour of India on 11 December 2025. Batting first, South Africa scored 213 for 4 in 20 overs on the back of aggressive stroke play and smart batting. In reply, India were all out for 162 and lost by 51 runs.

The Maharaja Yadvinder Singh Stadium was still a relatively new international venue and South Africa made good use of the conditions throughout the match. India’s inability to defend their home surface in a high-scoring match made this match particularly damaging.

India vs New Zealand – 50 runs

New Zealand toured India in January 2026 and made their mark at the ACA VDCA Cricket Stadium in Visakhapatnam on 28 January. New Zealand posted a score of 215/7 and bowled out India for 165, winning by 50 runs.

The 50-run margin is misleading as the chase never looked truly competitive at any stage. India’s middle order collapsed again at the start of the 2026 T20 World Cup campaign in a manner that was becoming all too familiar.

India vs South Africa – 49 runs

South Africa’s batting masterclass was held at the Holkar Stadium in Indore on October 4, 2022. South Africa posted a mammoth score of 227/3 and India were all out for 178.

Losing a bilateral series match by 49 runs despite the opposition scoring over 220 is a testament to a chase that never found a platform to move forward. South Africa’s batting during this period was one of the most destructive in world T20 cricket and Indore paid the price.

India vs Australia – 49 runs

The last entry on this list was at the 2010 T20 World Cup at Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados on May 7, 2010. Australia scored 184/5 and India were all out for 135.

A 49-run defeat in a World Cup match still hurts, no matter how old the scorebook. In that era, Australia were ruthless in knockout situations and India could not find an answer with either batting or fielding.

This match is a reminder that no matter how far Indian cricket has come since 2010, the format has always been capable of producing days like Trent Bridge in 2026.
