Rajasthan defeated Mumbai Indians by 30 runs to secure the fourth and final playoff spot in IPL 2026. The win took the Royals to 16 points from 14 league matches, ending the qualification hopes of Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders and Delhi Capitals in one fell swoop.

Archer’s Explosive Cameo Rescues Rajasthan’s Innings

The Royals desperately needed a win, but their specialist batsmen failed to produce the expected innings on a good batting surface. Vaibhav Suryavanshi was dismissed for just four runs, while Yashasvi Jaiswal bowled promisingly after an aggressive start, scoring 27 runs.

Captain Riyan Parag and wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel also failed to convert the start into a major contribution. At one point, Rajasthan were heading for a low score that could have well balanced the match.

Then came Jofra Archer. The England pacer made a stunning cameo that completely changed the innings. With three sixes and a four, Archer scored 32 runs in just 15 balls and dramatically changed the momentum in Rajasthan’s favour.

Along with him, Ravindra Jadeja scored an unbeaten 19 runs in 11 balls. The pair helped Rajasthan score 73 runs in the final five overs, taking the modest total to 205 for 8. At the halfway stage, those late runs already looked crucial.

By the end of the match, they proved crucial. Archer came in when Rajasthan needed to step up the game and returned after the total had crossed 200, the late surge that often separates playoff teams from the eliminated teams.

Archer’s New-Ball Burst Leaves Mumbai Reeling

Chasing a target of 206 under pressure, Mumbai Indians needed a strong start. Instead, they struck at Jofra Archer. The collapse began immediately when Archer bowled a brilliant outswinger to dismiss Rohit Sharma for a duck. The delivery went well beyond the former Mumbai captain, found the outside edge and settled safely into the gloves of Dhruv Jurel.

Archer struck again when Naman Dhir was bowled for six, leaving Mumbai struggling to chase. The damage was further compounded when Ryan Rickelton was dismissed for 12, giving Rajasthan complete control of the contest. Tilak Verma’s disappointing season also ended in disappointment when Brijesh Sharma’s low delivery thwarted his flick shot attempt.

By the end of the powerplay, Mumbai had scored 49 for 4. For a team chasing over 200, it was a disastrous start. Those six overs did more damage to the scoreboard than the bowlers. They forced Mumbai to settle for boundaries where every boundary was a pressure and every dot ball felt doubly expensive.

Suryakumar And Jacks Spark Brief Hope

Mumbai did not give up. Suryakumar Yadav scored 60 runs off 42 balls, including four sixes and three fours. He was joined by Will Jacks, who attacked aggressively during a quick innings of 33 runs off just 18 balls.

The pair added 63 runs for the fifth wicket and briefly revived Mumbai’s hopes. For the first time since the early collapse, Rajasthan found themselves under pressure. Suryakumar also enjoyed moments of luck along the way.

He escaped a run-out opportunity during a mix-up and later took advantage of a dropped catch while building his innings. Those moments kept Mumbai alive in the chase and prevented Rajasthan from falling behind completely.

The equation gradually became more manageable. Then Archer returned. For a while, Mumbai Indians could see a path to victory. The problem was that Rajasthan still had Archer waiting for one final spell.

Archer Seals Rajasthan’s Playoff Qualification

While Mumbai were still mathematically alive, Hardik Pandya launched a counterattack that threatened to change everything. The Mumbai captain scored 34 runs off just 15 balls and tried to take the game deeper. The target remained difficult but not impossible.

Archer made sure it remained impossible. Returning for his last over, the England pacer dismissed Pandya at a crucial moment and effectively ended Mumbai’s resistance. The wicket removed a batsman who was capable of creating something extraordinary under pressure.

Shortly after, Nandre Burger completed a sharp catch-and-ball opportunity to dismiss Suryakumar Yadav and remove the final hurdle between Rajasthan and Vijay.

Mumbai eventually finished at 175 for 9, 30 runs short of their target. Pandya threatened to rewrite the script. Archer simply tore up that script and wrote his own ending instead.

Royals Complete Their Playoff Mission

Archer’s explosive 32 helped the total cross the 200-mark. His figures of 3 for 17 put Mumbai in the hunt. Jadeja’s final contribution provided vital momentum in the closing stages. Burger and Brijesh Sharma provided valuable support with the ball.
