Tom Latham and Devon Conway created one of the greatest opening partnerships in New Zealand Test history, rewriting the record books with a mammoth 317-run stand against England on the first day of the series-deciding third Test at Trent Bridge on 25 June.
The pair became the first New Zealand opening pair to put on a 300-plus-run stand against England in Test cricket, breaking the previous record of 276 set by Stevie Dempster and Jackie Mills in Wellington in 1930.
In fact, before Latham and Conway’s efforts, Dempster and Mills were the only New Zealand opening pair to score more than 200 runs against England in Test cricket. The partnership at Trent Bridge not only surpassed that mark but also set a new record in the competition.
The huge partnership came to an end when England captain Ben Stokes left Latham behind with an over to go and was caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith. Latham returned with a brilliant 151 off 214 balls, which included 15 fours, and ended the partnership that had exhausted the England bowlers.
Conway was then dismissed in the very next over by Joe Root, who played a brilliant 157 off 224 balls, which included 22 fours and three sixes. The left-handed batsman looked completely calm throughout his innings, mixing patience and elegant strokeplay on the calm Trent Bridge surface.

The 317-run partnership between Latham and Conway is now New Zealand’s second-highest partnership for any wicket overseas, surpassing the 387-run opening partnership between Terry Jarvis and Glenn Turner against the West Indies at Georgetown in 1972.
| Opening Duo | Runs Added | Opposition | Venue | Year |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Terry Jarvis, Glenn Turner | 387 | West Indies | Georgetown, Guyana | 1972 |
| Devon Conway, Tom Latham | 323 | West Indies | Mount Maunganui, New Zealand | 2025 |
| Devon Conway, Tom Latham | 317 | England | Nottingham, England | 2026 |
| Stewie Dempster, Jackie Mills | 276 | England | Wellington, New Zealand | 1930 |
| Tom Latham, Jeet Raval | 254 | Bangladesh | Hamilton, New Zealand | 2019 |
With the series level at 1–1, New Zealand captain Latham’s decision to bat first after winning the toss was justified. England’s bowling attack, which included the returning Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson, was helped little by the flat pitch in unusually warm conditions. Stokes was the only bowler to regularly trouble the batsmen and finally found success after more than 72 frustrating overs.
The opening stand-in had carried New Zealand’s momentum after their convincing victory in the second Test and came despite the absence of key players Matt Henry, Glenn Phillips and Kyle Jamieson.
It was a big moment for Latham. It was his 17th Test century and a much-needed return to form after a disappointing series. For Conway, it was his eighth Test century and another reminder of his ability to score big on big occasions.
New Zealand completely dominated the first day of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge, finishing on a mammoth 361/4. Devon Conway and Tom Latham broke records with a mammoth 317-run partnership, with Latham scoring a brilliant 151 and Conway a superb 157. It was the perfect statement for a crucial start to the series.
