Nineteen seasons. Ten franchises. Billions spent on auctions and broadcasting every year. In that history, only three teams have won the IPL title twice in a row. This number tells you everything about how difficult it is to win this competition once and almost impossible to win it again.

Royal Challengers Bangalore became the third team in IPL history to win two consecutive titles by defeating Gujarat Titans in the 2026 final. The other two names on that list are Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. No other franchise has come close to that.

Chennai Super Kings: The First Team to Do It (2010 and 2011)

CSK first achieved this feat in 2010 and 2011, becoming the first team in the history of the IPL to win two consecutive titles. MS Dhoni was the captain for both seasons and the team relied on experience and calm decision-making under pressure.

In 2010, the final was played at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy. CSK won the toss and elected to bat first against Mumbai Indians. Mumbai Indians could not chase down the target of 168 runs and CSK won by 22 runs. In 2011, the final was played at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. CSK batted again against RCB and set a target of 205 runs.

RCB could only manage 147/8 in reply and CSK won by 58 runs. Two finals and two comfortable wins. CSK has won the IPL a total of five times under Dhoni, making him, along with Rohit Sharma, the joint most successful captain in the tournament’s history. These two consecutive victories are the foundation of that legacy.

Mumbai Indians: The Second and the Closest

Eight years later, another team joined CSK. Mumbai Indians achieved the feat in 2019 and 2020 under the leadership of Rohit Sharma and the nature of both the victories could not have been more different.

The 2019 final ended with the closest finish in IPL history. Mumbai defeated Chennai Super Kings by just one run at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. After scoring 149/8, MI restricted CSK to 148/7 and secured their fourth IPL title. CSK needed two runs off the last ball and couldn’t get it. One run separates the teams and MI kept their nerve.

The 2020 season was played in the UAE and MI defeated Delhi Capitals by five wickets in the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Chasing 157 runs, Mumbai achieved the target in 18.4 overs to retain the trophy and become the first franchise to win five IPL titles. Rohit Sharma has now led MI to all five titles. This makes him, along with Dhoni, the joint most successful captain in the IPL.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru: The Emotional Journey That Ended in Glory (2025 and 2026)

No title win in the history of IPL carries more emotional weight than RCB’s first title. RCB waited 18 years for their first IPL title and won it in the 2025 season. A season later, they returned to the same ground and did the same again. The path to consecutive champions after 18 years of pain has never been seen before in the tournament.

In the 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium, PBKS won the toss and elected to bowl first. RCB scored 190/9 and Punjab Kings trailed by six runs at 184/7. In the 2026 final at the same venue, RCB won the toss and elected to bowl first against Gujarat Titans. GT scored 155/8 in 20 overs. RCB chased down the total with 161/5 in 18 overs.

Virat Kohli scored his fastest IPL half-century, scoring an unbeaten 75 off 42 balls. RCB joined Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings as the only franchises in IPL history to retain this title.

Why Back-to-Back Is Almost Impossible in the IPL?

Every team changes every year in the IPL auction. Injuries come without warning. Form in T20 cricket disappears overnight. A bad powerplay in a knockout game brings an immediate end to the season. The entire competition is designed to prevent any team from dominating.

CSK tried three times in a row and lost to KKR in the 2012 final. MI won five titles in different years but never three times in a row. IPL is designed only to prevent dynasties. That is why only three teams have been able to win even twice in a row in 19 seasons. Every name on that list won the hard way.
